It's a bit "Dawson's Creek" but quite pretty....definitely a more successful attempt at the country vibe than "You and I"

I've always loved BaladGa and this is no expectation. An album like this and I'd be a very happy fan.

Their problem is she has spent the last 3 years changing her image and dropping all the crazy stuff in favour of becoming a more serious artist concentrating more on vocals than image. You can't spend your life worrying about what the fans want -- especially hers -- because they have trouble agreeing what day of the week it is. I think she is going her own way and if she losses some fans on the way so be it as she will pick up others that like the new style and direction. I'm a fan -- but not even close to being a monster -- and I really like the new Gaga

If you check youtube there are snippets from most of the songs from Joanne.
Apparently some glitch in amazon caused these to leak out early. Not really caring for any of it. The songs have a very slow country/folk feeling to them and her vocals are grating. I like indie/alternative but more of the uptempo electric guitar based rock sound, not slow country folk as seems to be on this album. I understand you can't be limited to what your fans want but you can't totally ignore them either. I like it when artists incorporate new sounds or genres, but still retain a core of what made me like them in the first place. Otherwise the reinvention doesn't sound authentic. I hear nothing of the old Gaga here at all. Whether people liked them or not, I think the outrageous costumes were part of her appeal and actually meant something to her fans. She stood for being an outsider and not fitting the norm of mainstream society and the weird clothes weren't just meaningless but an embodiment of being an outsider. To give those up in some way feels like a betrayal of what she stood for. She just seems to have moved too far away from the Gaga people loved, that I really don't see much of an audience for this album at all. |

The samples sound really bland. I think this era is going to be an almighty flop for her but kudus to her for trying a new sound.

I heard the sample of Million Reasons on itunes yesterday and I immediately thought of Pink. I had a little of her sound to it, when she does less up tempo stuff. It's an interesting switch music wise for Gaga. I'm not overly sold so far on the two songs I have heard. They're alright but they haven't blown me away. To be honest, I found my interest waning in her music after BTW. The preaching got a bit much for me and i had liked her since before she hit it big, back when she was being praised by Perez as up and coming.
I do want to hear the whole album though. I like a bit of country music now and then, but it's got to have a good hook. Perfect Illusion was alright but I thought her voice sounded more strained on it and it was just repetition rather than something more in depth. Catchy but not her best. |

Yeah I'm going to have to reserve judgement until I've heard the album in full. From the snippets, I'm not really loving them. John Wayne and Dancin in circles probably caught my attention the most. I'd be up for something completely if it was still catchy. From the snippets I've heard, the lyrics can get a little repetitive and the melodies seem a little meander-y and as someone else previously said, bland.

I am slightly underwhelmed at the moment. I understand Gaga said Joanne would be more autobiographical and more emotional to her, but the majority of the songs don't seem to stand out. Perfect Illusion seems to be the loud song of the album.
Hey Girl, A-Yo and Dancin' in Circles sound pretty good though

Is she not doing any TV Promo here ? I thought she was meant to be on Graham Norton but it turned out to be Niall instead. She's not on this week either.

There's no hype for this whatsoever is there, I haven't heard perfect illusion once once on the radio since the day it debuted.
This will struggle for number 1 |

Yeah I've just had my first listen of the album.....and it isn't bad, but pretty underwhelming.
The whole thing could do with a shot of adrenaline as there's some nice songs but the stripped back production starts to sound a little samey and drags after a while. I can see why Perfect Illusion was chosen as the lead single as it is by far the most "GaGa" and commercial sounding. Anyway I think the album opener and closer are great (Diamond Heart and Angel Down) but there's a lot of hit and miss in between. John Wayne and Dancin' In Circles are both let down by non-event choruses, while the duet with Florence Welsh is boring (just "Hayyy Gurllllll, Hayy Gurllllll" repeated endlessly). Come To Mama is really interesting and sounds like a homage to 60s girl group motown and Sinner's Prayer is also quite good. I would say there are only two real duds on the album (Hey Girl and Ayo) but I can't see myself playing it too often either as it just doesn't excite me. It might change though and the other songs might grow on me. Oh I also have to say it sounds like GaGa is channeling Lana Del Rey on the title track and Sinner's Prayer

Oh god this album is one big crushing dissapointment
And that duet with Florence is an absolute mess. I love gaga i really do, which is probably why im so sad that i just do not like her new work. I know not many would agree but i would rather have the 'artpop act 2' than this. i know shes an artist and all that but i just really wish she would go back to how she was at the start, even just for one album, she is capable of writing hits, but she just does not seem to want to anymore. even her unreleased demo's are good, and for me preferable to anything on the new album! im holding out hope that she does another album next year, though i know its a long shot! |

The thing about Gaga is that she's always pushing herself and her vast talent in different directions. To me, this was evident ever since The Fame Monster, with songs like Speechless and Teeth, which I loved. By the time ARTPOP came around, her boredom with the generic pop mould everyone was pushing her in started to show in her work, where she was perhaps stubbornly experimenting with tracks like Jewels N Drugs and Mary Jane Holland, neither of which suited her nor delved much into her talent as a songwriter. What we ended up with was a soulless acronym-turned-generic pop single like G.U.Y., which still remains one of my least favourite tracks from that album.
Now, I've only heard a few tracks from Joanne, but I feel that it is shaping up beautifully. I'll admit Perfect Illusion left me cold on the first listen, but it turned out to be electrifying to dance to and sing(shout)-along to. Million Reasons is gorgeous and had me bawling on the first listen, and almost serves as an antidote to ARTPOP's shaky Dope. Sinner's Prayer is the real deal here, so far I'd say the Speechless of the album. The music is captivating throughout and the lyrics are sublime, where credit once again goes to Gaga's family life from where she clearly draws some all-important inspiration. John Wayne is just so much fun, so I'll forgive the G.U.Y.-inspired bridge. As for the obvious country/rock vibes developing, after her jazz album it is clear that she enjoys taking time to explore new genres and why should anyone stand in her way? Personally, I can't wait to see what she does next. |

I've listened to parts of the leak and so far I'm underwhelmed. Ayo I quite like, and also John Wayne but Dancin' in Circles is a bit of a let down considering it was the clip I was most excited by. Sinner's Prayer is ok, not blown away just yet. I still don't like PI and I think Million Reasons is a bit middle of the road. I haven't listened to anything else yet but I'll do so tomorrow when I have more time. I can totally appreciate she's going for something different with this album and wants to show other sides but I'm just not drawn to that many of the songs.
When BTW came out I was obsessed for ages and played it to death, but I don't think that will happen with this one sadly. I could be wrong, just my first impression of the tracks I was most grabbed by after the 30sec snippets. |

It's a much more personal album for sure. It's different from her but I really like.
At first I was slightly disappointed with the Florence collab but now I really like it, give it a few listens it'll get stuck in your head I love Dancin' In Circles (reminds me of something she would have wrote for TFM) |
