I agree with the above. The album is far more appealing to a US audience.

Whatevs. She'll never be Madonna or reach her level of cultural gravitas. The fact that an album of material over 40 years old has trumped her new work says all we need to know about the longevity of Gaga. She is this generation's Marilyn Manson- a few controversial stunts do not a solid career make. She is a footnote.

200k in one week aint bad in this day and age. Especially considering she didn't have a monster hit single to back it up.
She was never going to do an Adele or Taylor swift and do one million in one week again
But if people can be negative, they will. But i think the word flop is overused these days.

What's with the comparison to Madonna? It's so predictable and dull. I love both artists but have never put them against one another.

I agree. There were some similarities in the early days of Gaga's career but they are nothing alike these days. It's a lame, old and very boring insult to use towards her.

This isn't aimed at you directly - but I wonder if little monsters would say the numbers were brilliant fir say Rihanna, madonna, Taylor etc especially around lady gagas peak eras -- I remember a lot of hate from gags fans back in the day when she was selling loads .... now the table has turned these figures are great

That may not of been down to her.
I don't see the Madonna comparisons thesedays. I think she has distanced herself from it. I loved Gaga from 2008 to 2010 but then I fell out of love with her as everything she did felt and looked like she had morphed into Madonna, she was walking around like a tribute act. I think the long blonde pony tail at the Grammy's really was the straw that broke the camels back. You can pay homage to your idols, Madonna herself does it all the time with Monroe, but when you actually start to believe you are them the shark has been jumped and I do think Gaga believed for a period she was Madonna. Especially when Gaga jumped on the whole religious symbolism mixed into her image which has been Madonna's signature selling point for her entire career. I think it was right Madonna called her out on it with the Express Yourself/Born This Way segment of her MDNA tour. I think that is probably when Gaga realized she had become a parody of herself as after that she slowly started to change her image.
I think Joanne is a brilliant step forward for her. Some of the lyrics are dodgy but this album has a more adult feel. Lady Gaga will never be Beyonce or Adele but she is still relevant.

Yes I did think America would appreciate this album a lot more.
It would sound great on something like jules Holland show
I think Gaga could pull of an MTV Unplugged session with this album. Throw in a few old hits done acoustic style as well.
200k's better than I expected considering its UK performance.
However, it's gonna drop hard - there aren't any bangers on the album to sustain a long cycle. She might do well to just embrace her cult of fans from now on and stop trying to be a world-conquering superstar. Those days are over.

Different release strategy though
Anti was released as a free download for the first day or two. And then it never it had a physical release until a week or two later.

Her first week sales in the US are impressive, especially for an album released on the back of an underperforming lead single, it's certainly exceeded expectations.
The album is down to #15 in the UK midweeks. I'm sure it can pick up again with a little promotion over the Christmas period. Million Reasons has the potential to do well.

I don't like country as a rule and would not have even bothered to listen to this if it wasn't Lady Gaga but I find Joanne a pretty good album for the most part. There are only a couple of tracks I truly dislike.
I like that she's toned down the wacky outfits like the meat dress and the post Born This Way era preaching. It all got a bit much in the end. The music should always be able to speak for itself.

It's better than Art Pop was. i only kept: Diamond Heart, Joanne, John Wayne, Dancin' In Circles, Perfect Illusion, Million Reasons, Sinner's Prayer and Angel Down. The rest i binned.
