And for Amazon, it's all about subscriptions and associated sales anyway.

How will the numbers hold up in the long term? Will it justify Amazon's eye-watering, eggs-all-in-one-basket investment? Maybe it's already paid for itself (though I'd doubt that)..

The problem for Amazon is that without constant publicity and advertising, it's very easy for streamed shows to be forgotten about by everyone apart from the fans. You're not going to pick up the casual viewer, because they simply don't have access to it. However one thing Clarkson and co have been good for recently is getting lots of 'free' advertising via (sometimes manufactured?) controversy creating news coverage. We'll have to see if that is something that continues.”

Why do we, as members of the public, need to know what the viewing figures are? What would you do with that information? They're not selling slots to advertisers. They're not in a ratings war with other channels. The only relevant question is, does TGT encourage you to take up a Prime subscription or to renew one? Okay, there's probably a second pertinent question: Will Amazon renew TGT after the 36 episodes? But no-one can do anything to influence the answer to that question other than to take out a subscription.

As you say, they want people to subscribe to Prime and to use other Amazon services. TGT won't necessarily even have to recoup its costs, it's already provided them with a colossal amount of advertising and publicity and that in itself has probably driven some subscriptions, irrespective of whether all of those people are even CHM fans.

No-one outside Amazon can put TGT's success "into context". Only Amazon can do that as only they will know what the objectives were in the first place and whether or not they've been met. How many viewers TGT gets compared to TG is completely irrelevant, they're different shows which exist for entirely different reasons.

It's pretty clear it's a success in every way this isn't a bunch of nobodies making a new show on itv 4, do you know of their fanbase? this is why it is and will continue to be a success, you can go on about all you like, the fact is it's a huge success.

Got tomorrow night off, so I'm hoping to watch the second episode as soon as it becomes available at 11PM (or whenever) provided nothing else would dare to interfere!

The size of the audience is something that’s often discussed over in the US TV forum, because in US television it’s not how many people watch a programme that determines it’s success, it’s how many people are in the 18-49 year old demographic.
For example a programme with 10 million viewers and a high 18-49 demo rating would be considered more successful than a programme with 15 million viewers and a low 48-49 demo rating.

It’s a similar case with The Grand Tour and Amazon. It’s not how many people are actually watching the programme that’ll define it’s success, it’s how subscription numbers have trended in parallel with the programme and all the extra publicity around it (and the service) that’s been generated.

However, ‘success’ and ‘popularity’ are not always the same thing.
And I suspect that’s why we’re still so obsessed with the number of viewers – we simply want to know how popular something is. Whereas for those involved in the business side of things it’s more about how successful something is.

That still matters in UK ratings, it's just that said stats aren't publicised.

The thing with TGT is that however much we may like to think it is it actually isn't a UK show. It's American or probably even Global. Even the UK audience for TG of 5m was a drop in the ocean to the global audience which was reported at 350m.

Whatever TGT gets in the UK will be dwarfed by the global views once it goes out to 200+ countries in December and at the end of the day that's what Amazon want to capitalise on, the additional sales in general goods it can generate and of course the potential DVD sales later down the line.

As has already been said its success will be measured not by UK ratings but against what Amazon were expecting from it and nothing else. We will never know what that is but for now they seem to be happy.

Some people who either don't like the programme or one of the presenters actively look for something that they can take offence at.
I'm not saying Clarkson is a saint, but these people will never acknowledge the success of a programme he is associated with.

Shame, but their loss.

Well the free delivery, movies, box sets, apps etc sweetened the deal, but I doubt I would have subscribed if it wasn't for this.

I have been a big fan of Top Gear over the years so watched this new episode of the Grand Tour last night. My God, it was so awful.

Everything seemed so totally scripted that the segments in fornt of the audience resembled a sitcom.
James May looked like he was reading from an autocue at times, and Jeremy Clarkson just seemed elsewhere

And the audience going "wooooh!" all together on cue had the feeling of a pantomime.

I'm sorry to say I wont be wasting my time watching the next episode

So this is what I think of episode 2

Spoiler
Overall slightly disapointed, the American test driver is back obviously we are stuck with his awful one liners all series. same with doing the same joke with killing the celeb as they walk in. Didnt really like the special forces thing the keep dying and doing it all again got very stale quickly and a lot of it just wasnt funny.

Via Amazon, it's just streamed over the hour, you don't get to download it.

Enjoyed the second episode overall, best segments were Jeremy trying to get into the Vulcan & the in-tent talking bits. Yes, the Special Forces Training was a bit too repetitive, but I think it was just to emphasise how useless they were at it. Maybe, if they had played Call of Duty or Battlefield first for a few days before flying out to Jordan...
We'll have to get used to Mike Skinner as the professional lap timer, because what else can they do with that feature? Still, they might drop Celebrity Brain Crash before the end of the series.
