Had the same joke been made by a guest such as David Walliams, Julian Clary, Graham Norton, or a multitude of other gay comedians, would anyone have bothered?

I didn't find the joke funny at all, but I don't really watch the show for the crappy humour. It was the type of thing I would expect to hear from schoolboys or in any "laddish" environment, when someone is spotted wearing pink, carrying a "manbag", drinking anything other than a pint, etc. I imagine that would account for the majority of Grand Tour's viewers.

I know you have to suspend disbelief watching these specials, but presumably they arrived at the original meeting point via a road, so why didn't they just go back out that way? (Yes, I know it wouldn't have made very good television)

The special started off pretty slow but really got going after the first 15 minutes. Part 2 tomorrow.

A bit off topic here but is anyone else watching both back to back?

I can't wait to binge them
Heck no, I haven't got the patience for that, back to back is for second viewing

I thought it was great just like Top Gear specials. Possibly one of the best episodes of the series.

Thought it was a great episode and I have to admit when Hammond disappeared over the edge of that dune I thought he had rolled it

I thought that must be what the article I linked to in the Mirror was all about.
Best bit? Dick-tari!!
Looking at the map linked by CD93, I wonder which of those small settlements was the one with the pylons. Was it so small it didn't have anywhere for them to stay? I know they wasted a lot of time driving up & down the beach and with Jezza's 'reliable' star nav system, but was there really nowhere for them to stop off for the night between the beach and Windhoek?

Was he eating ice cream at the time?

I did actually think that when they couldn't find the way at first, why not use the road that they must have originally arrived on but like you it doesn't make for good TV.

A good special so far. Looking forward to part 2 tomorrow.

There was very little of them breaking new ground. I realise they doubled back but even when they started heading inland they were following existing tracks a lot of the time.
It's all rather obviously stage-managed but was nevertheless very enjoyable TV and almost indistinguishable from the TG specials.

I started to get a bit nervous for the producers when they all started complaining about how hungry they were.

We all know what happens when Jeremy Clarkson is hungry!!!

The tracks they are following are probably being left by the camera car running in front of them and filming the head on shots. When there are no tracks I expect the camera cars are hanging back or filming from the side.

According to an interview Hammond gave they were supposed to reach pre-arranged rest points (albeit simple camp sites as there aren't any hotels in the desert} each day. However they actually DID get lost and didn't reach them.

Oh really. Of course I could just say "It really was".

Anyone who's never found Richard Hammond funny needs to have a long hard think about how their lives have panned out.

For the record, my life has panned out rather well, all through my own efforts. I live in a nice house with my nice wife and we are very happy. And guess what - I think Richard Hammond says some very funny things. Wow, how can that be possible?
Gosh, I was rather excited when I read the above post. So to enable me to emulate Andy2's obviously enviable and fabulous lifestyle (minus the wife as I'm a straight female) all I have to do is find Hammond funny.

Having thought about it I have come to the sad conclusion that no matter how hard I try I simply don't find Hammond or that joke funny or even amusing, can't raise a snigger or a snort or a titter even. Nothing. Oh dear, I guess I'll have to stay in my hovel, sniff.

Slightly bonkers to make a connection between a lifestyle and whether Hammond is funny don't you think?

Namibia part 1 was good - perhaps could have benefited from less of the repetitive driving up and down the beach at the beginning. I am sure there is more to see and do in Namibia, which I hope is covered in part 2.

Yes I do. Now you need to ask Exstoker84 why he made the connection in post #948. To suggest that anyone who finds Hammond funny is somehow lacking in status was not a nice (or very sensible) thing to do, so I simply pointed out that I do find Hammond funny AND my life has panned out really quite well. Is that a problem?

Same here Made me laugh when Clarkson asked how he managed to get down there and Hammond said with my eyes closed lol

Really enjoyed that episode, especially them driving down the dunes.

I bought myself a 4K HDR TV today and the Namibia special was the first Ultra HD programme I've watched on it (and the only one so far since I don't have any other 4K sources. My Netflix subscription is only HD)

I must say that Clarkson's face isn't the best advert for 4K but the rest of it looked incredible.

I noticed that at the end of the credits it said CHUMP production.

Is that Clarkson, Hammond und May Productions?

I said the exact same thing to my wife.
I wonder if it was mentioned & edited out, or they just wouldn't dare bring it up.

So we really believe that they spent the entire night sleeping on the ground in the desert alone without any food? Where did the big filming and support crew go?
