I'm not keen on the way the show is presenting the idea of a Host going off to get her 'daughter' as a sign of free will.
All she is doing is following another script. If she had any intelligence (and I'm not saying she hasn't) then she would know that she wasn't really her daughter, so why feel any sense of attachment to her other than a memory? We have to remember that this is a show written by humans who at best may have some philosophical message to impart but most likely just want to make money with an entertaining TV show. Of course it's just an entertainment. A TV show made to make money for the investors and a living for the creatives involved. That doesn't necessarily stop the creatives from including something more meaningful to perhaps provoke thought and discussion. Doesn't the best art do that? |

It's not clear which path was the scripted one, the one she took or the one she chose not to. Perhaps both are scripted in advance, like the possible actions in an adventure game.

Would she have still have left the train to look for her daughter if there hadn't been a mother and daughter there? Has she looked deeper at her 'programming' to understand if her maternal instinct is real or not? The show does pose some very good philosophical questions, I just fear that they won't try to answer them in any way, like they did with 'Lost' and other shows that end up with 'It was all a dream' type answers. |

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but here is a capture of the Maeve's coding.
http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...pssrb846ju.jpg As I've said before it is difficult to see how a procedural language can produce sentience, without there being some sort of neural network and organic matter involved. Or how they can rewrite their own code without the pads. |

I forgot to mention that it was also a big signpost that she would leave the train when they (the writers) put that mother and daughter right in front of her.
We humans are also, to a degree, prisoners of our biological, evolutionary programming, just like the core programming of the hosts in this show. In our case the core programming comes from evolution that produced the behaviour necessary for survival and successful reproduction. In the hosts' case it comes from deliberate human design. I understand that, unlike Lost, this show has a plan. Lost was very entertaining and mysterious but a tremendous let down in the end. The problem was the producers and writers didn't have a plan beyond a limited first season. When it was an unexpected runaway success in that first season they had to quickly come up with a way to expand the scope of the story and then everything else was, as Terry Pratchett would have said, "makeitupasyougoalongium". |

Thandie Newton has just received a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe nomination. Evan Rachel Wood also nominated in the Best Actress category.

Just noticed it's still under way and Rachel Wood has been nominated too. Winona Ryder getting nominated for Stranger things is a bit of a joke, thought she was the worst thing in it. The 12 year olds put in better performances. |

Thoroughly deserved, I think Hopkins, Wright and Rachel Wood should at least be nominated too so that's a bit disappointing if they don't make it (maybe they'll have to wait till the Emmys or Baftas). Whether you enjoyed the show or not I think everyone can agree the acting was top notch.

Yeah I just added her name to my post when her name was announced. No nomination for Hopkins which is surprising.

Very surprised at neither Hopkins or Wright making it, I would have expected at least one of them to be nominated. Maybe Hopkins role is considered 'supporting'?

That's not their underlying code - it's just a command script for their current 'narrative' that dictates their broad responses to events and longer term goals. What's lying at the very base layer of their 'operating system' (which allows them to act like humans) is obviously a lot more complex and capable of rewriting itself as part of a learning process.

![]() Also, Hopkins delivered an excellent performance and will, hopefully, get the recognition he deserves. All the cast were fantastic, it's part of what made it so compelling. And the producers talked about season two, I'll use spoiler tags for those who want to know absolutely nothing (to be honest, it's nothing major anyhow).
Spoiler
I like the idea, but dunno if it's an idea that can go for ten episodes. |

I'm sorry but your spoiler doesn't make sense, Delos are the company that own the park.

Well, pretty sure that sometimes the park is also referred to as Delos. Pretty sure...

Can't say I remember hearing that, I have heard mention of the Delos Board visiiting etc., but not the actual park being called Delos.

I was really annoyed that Maeve got off the train - I so wanted her to stay on it.
