I thought he was somehow going to be standing behind the nurse.

She's gonna get to the point where only dogs can bloody well hear her!
The expensive rustle of her silk blouses is louder than her voice.

I wondered who she was but I think she was just a confused old lady who thought Stella was her daughter. She's just listed in RT as "old lady"

I thought he was going to sit up in bed behind the nurse....Halloween style.
I stopped watching it, but had to take another look, just at that point!

Just when you think it couldn't get any more absurd, they somehow manage to crank it up another level.
I wasn't going to watch the previous series because it stretched credibility too far. But I did stick with it hoping for a conclusion of some kind. This time I'm definitely calling it a day, it's gone from the sublime to the ridiculous and beyond. Enough is enough.
Enjoy everyone.

I really enjoyed that episode. I liked the fact that it was pretty slow and gave you time to think and breathe.

I'm guessing the old lady is Stella's excuse to stick around after that nurse told her to leave. Stella's either acting as a guard or she's thinking about killing Spector.

Colin Morgan looked pale and interesting. I am still convinced he has had his ears pinned back!

When you compare it to series one, it's like a different show altogether. As for the cliched light at the end of tunnel........

Someone further up said the majority was like an episode of Casualty, and I agree. Boring as hell. That's the problem with this, it's just boring and slow and convoluted and far-fetched.

Yes that's what I took from it. They're trying to develop Stella's characterisation more by showing her softer side with both the old lady scene and the speech she did to Rose's husband about Rose's behaviour. There's an aspect of Stella that's about standing up for women and that she's not really all 'ice queen' - we've seen glimpses of it in the previous series.

Agree with others that it was too much like Holby City but I did wonder why they made the decision to show so many medical scenes - must've been for a reason. What are they trying to get the viewer to think [aside from 'Hurry the hell up!']? Maybe it's some kind of revenge on Spector - e.g. we've seen him make the women suffer and now it's his turn? Odd anyway.

Also weird to see the nurse resemble his brunette, attractive victims! That's for a reason as well.

Hopefully more will happen in the next episode.

LOL. Indeed. The entire hospital doesn't have any private rooms at all where he could be looked after, and of course more closely guarded
He was in a private room on the same ward . Not a bad episode, interesting to see where it will go now.

Well in spite of what other people on here have been saying I rather enjoyed that, as I always have.

I think the show had a choice to make early on which was to either return to Stella with a different case, or explore the same case in more depth. Likely not wanting to let go of Jamie '50 Shades' Dornan they opted to stick with the same case. It did lead to a difficult second series where you didn't know where it was going exactly, though it was still largely quite good. I personally think it works better in hindsight with this being the confirmed final series of the show. Series 1 explored the crime, Series 2 explored the capture, Series 3 presumably explores either the courts of the conviction. I think it works nicely as a three-part act - the second series could have become gratuitously bloodthirsty had it just kept up the killing spree but aside from the odd leap of logic it's done quite well to explore just the one case. Others think the show drags but I enjoy the fact it takes its time, I think it has just enough character nuances to pull it off. At this point I love seeing how Stella interacts with everyone - her obsession with Spector shows how fixated and even troubled she is herself (I saw the whole thing with the old woman at the end as being her excuse to stay at the hospital as she couldn't let go of the job), her scene with Tom Stagg was perhaps the strongest bit of dialogue in the episode as she explained the difference between submitting and consenting, whilst her relationship with Merlin is really interesting too.

I'm glad to see it back!

If I was to try and think about it from a drama/metaphorical point of view I'd probably think it was there to be a bit unsettling. They emphasised how gruesome the surgery was, and didn't hold back from letting it run relentlessly with all the technobabble you'd expect to hear and not understand. It's a character we're supposed to really, really hate - they want to portray the saving of his life as something relentlessly disgusting that we also can't quite make sense of.

That is, if you care for reading into these kinds of things

Those medical scenes completely ruined the episode and that Doctor in charge was so annoying.

It was a waste of an episode and I hope next weeks is better.

Worst episode ever and those medical scenes bored me to tears.

Also what's with all the hate in this thread? On Facebook and other sites people act like The Fall is the best thing ever. Typical Digital Spy hating on everything possible.

I think they emphasised the hospital scenes to show that, whatever Paul Spector had done, they weren't going to let him off lightly. Also the quiet bits in the programme made the frantic operation scenes more telling.

By the way, it wasn't Merlin who was shot in the arm! It was Colin Morgan, or if you want to be precise in the context of the drama, Tom Anderson!

The 'acting' in those medical scenes was dreadful though IMO.
