If memory serves me correctly the first series was broadcast in May/June, when University Challenge was finished for the series so that could be a reason behind it.

So Stella has a compassionate side. But that didn't come as a surprise.
She's fascinated by Spector. Ditto.
What's this 'policing that she does best' business? I don't recall much policing going on. Why would she be hanging round the hospital anyway? She wouldn't.

The death-tunnel cliche was toe-curlingly awful.

Anderson's delivery may make this unwatchable for me.

The eyes-opening cliche was also a bit cheesy.

I have enjoyed The Fall up until now. The usual morbid fascination with evil etc etc. But this episode was just dull. It's only interesting when we get to see Spector's twisted psychology. Without that it's just.....well, he had better wake up soon and start manipulating people!

I'd be interested to know why this matters. If you set your HD recorder to 'series record' it'll pick it up whenever it's on.

Apart from soaps and a few long running series (University Challenge is a good case in point) there isn't a clear cut day for other stuff to be transmitted ... so why the fuss?

Thanks. I never noticed the son and now know why.

Gillian always plays that sort of person tho. I will have a youtube and see if I can find any of her being interviewed. I have never seen her 'act' any different but I am not a fan of her so my knowledge is limited of her.

Just found this interview and sounds like there will be a series 4. Jamie said that there has not been a court case yet .........

Finally watching the first episode.

Paul's kids seem to have aged years overnight! Couldn't they have recast younger kids?! His daughter was a little girl 'yesterday'.
By comparison she looks nearly a teenager now!

Not literally of course, but she looks far too old. It's distracting! Specially as she featured so much previously.

The script has a bit of fun with this with a line of dialogue from ep2.

University challenge is 8pm for half an hour. The Fall has always occupied a post 9pm slot so why would University Challenge being on air or not make any difference?

I thought I was watching an episode of casualty for most of the episode but I was touched by Stella's 'being with' the elderly woman in the ICU who mistook her for a relative and the excellent advice she gave to Rose's partner. Such a sage!

I suspect this series is going to be about the fall out from serial killing and how it impacts on the lives of others (hope so anyway).

Hope it reels in the implausibility of much of season 2 and Katie doesn't go on a killing spree. The minx.

I'm still enjoying it. As much as the medical stuff went on, it was meticulous and thorough (I imagine it was well researched and accurate) and finally showed Paul in a position where he has no power, completely at the hands of the medical staff. Even when he was arrested, he was exerting his influence.

I loved the scenes with Stella and Tom Stagg, probably the best moment of the episode for me, and I'm intrigued to see how Rose develops, the coldness/numbness she exhibited when with her husband, the daughter's painting etc. Really hope they explore her progression and/or recovery further. Stella's scene with the older patient was another great moment.

My only criticism is the tunnel scenes. It seemed too juvenile and cliched, just out of sync with the rest of the show. Presumably with how episode 1 ended, we'll not be seeing any more of them.

I don't watch a lot of tv and so the whole '24 hours in A&E' thing was more interesting. The line about 'what is this, the 70s ..' was pitch perfect.

Agree with the general sentiments - about the tunnel cliche and the much better team talk between Stella and Tom Stagg - very well judged scene

Is Rose going to end up killing Sector .. are we ever going to find out why Stella is the way she is ..

Because they could push what was in the 9pm slot back to 8 on a Monday during those months.

However it also clashed with Game of Thrones when it was aired on that Monday series.

The 2nd episode is much better, with a very interesting twist.

I've always wondered if Stella's obsession with him perhaps contained just the tiniest bat-squeak of lust, possibly unrealised even by her.”

If you've only got that far then you could speed up a little; of course she's infatuated with what she see's - what Spector represents rather than the individual.

In a sense Spector is a magnificent feral beast, that's what the young woman sees, that's what intrigues Stella. It's like walking into a lion's enclosure; to understand, to tame the untameable (sic). To be in the company of that much power you can't control.

The earlier poster who mentioned women writing to monster's in prison seems to be on the right track - some of these women also marry the monsters they contact.

tbh, I gave up understanding women long ago, and that was just in the context of relatively *mainstream* sex. God knows the emotional complications that go through some women's minds.

Lol!

As for the rest, I think what you say about (men) not being able to figure out women can be said for a lot of women not being able to figure out men. And I think you've said something really interesting. Both Stella and Katie are fascinated with Spector because the one man who would would have helped them make sense of men - i.e. their fathers - were missing from their lives. IIRC, Stella's dad might have abused her or something. So Spector is a male monster but one who both fascinates and repulses her None of the men she "conquers" quite does for her. Katie's dad died when she was young and Spector is the male fantasy she is both infatuated and obsessed with. And then of course you have Spector's daughter who will offer a different father-daughter relationship and narrative.

we're on the third series now, surely most people have got the general idea?

Haven't read all of this, did you talk about Stella sending another lackey around to her hotel to, notionally, pick up a change of clothes and 'tidy her papers' - haven't we been here before, this little act of intimacy, with the gun-toting redhead?

Why is it going into the mechanics of policing? It's supposed to be about a serial killer.

Gillian Anderson's voice is irritating me so much! Did she not read all the complaints about it in the previous series?

The overt series arc is about that. That's the starting point.

I think now the serial killer has been caught, it's really about the fallout for all the people involved, including the police, the family, Katie, etc. Stella seems to have broken all sorts of police rules about proper safety procedure, this could have serious consequences for her career in the police.

What I want to know is, why was she being interviewed by double murderer Hazel Stewart?

I think keeping the story moving is more important than all this minute detail.

I agree, it's really dragging it out and frankly it's not interesting. It's like the writer has had to pad it to fill the full series.

All 3 of them!!!!!
Her voice is her voice, what do you want her to do about it? Be dubbed like Gerry Adams was way-back-when!?
