Top 10 Worst Coronation Street Characters Ever!
But lets be realistic though, not controversial.
Les Battersby: With Corrie losing its credibility in the 90s due to an onslaught of Comedic Characters and the ongoing success of EE and Brookie it was decided that Corrie needed to return to its roots, some characters failed better than most(Hayley for example) however Les Battersby to me just came across as a poor man's Jimmy Corkhill. Stella Price: Too much hype surrounded the character, was meant to give Corrie a new identity but average acting, poor writing and lack of character development made her just another passing visitor. Karl Munro: The Stella/Karl relationship was as interesting as a load of edited Antiques Roadshow footage, while Stella was forgettable Karl was a amnesiacs dream, his affair with Sunita was also for my money the worst love triangle in the Soap's history. Gemma: One of the worst actresses in the Soap's History and an awful attempt at Comic Relief, makes Shameless look like Downton Abbey. Cathy Matthews: Should learn a few things off her ex-husband(Sean Bean) and just go! Sean Tully: At first he was a breathe of fresh air due to the whole Queer as Folk/Canal Street acceptance of Homosexuals, now that fresh air is polluted. Dev Alahan: Like one of those films(The Room is an example), he is so bad its almost entertaining. Jerry Morton: Michael Starke is a Soap legend and Sinbad is an iconic character, but like Michelle Collins he was too well known in his previous Soap and didnt settle in as well as people thought he was. John Stape: When Corrie went through its Post Tram Crash hangover/Jump the shark moment, he gave us some of the Soaps most pointless & unrealistic storylines. Fiz Stape: John Stape should have Kidnapped and tied her up, not Rosie! |

Callum - a wet lettuce of a baddie who didn't need to be murdered, someone could have just hidden his skinny jeans.
That mechanic who is dating Audrey - what is the point of him? Awfully forced into the show. Kim Tate - why? Go away. caz - makes Maria look like a RADA level professional. She chews the set! |

I agree with some of your suggestions Tom, especially the likes of John Stape, but Corrie has had some far, far worse characters over the years.
My top 10 ... -Scooter -Joanne & Jessie the 'twins' -Jesse Chadwick (the cringeworthy children's entertainer played by the otherwise talented John Thomson) -Vernon Tomlin -Luke Strong -Cheryl Gray & Russ -Brian Packham -Mandy Kamara -Jenna Kamara -Gloria Price |

Jerry Morton:

To be fair, as I remember it people on this forum didn't do him a lot of favours by constantly calling him Sinbad and not Jerry...

I'm sure there must have been some worse characters in the 60's and 70's. Nobody's mentioning them I think this should be changed to the worse characters from the 80's onwards

Problem is that era is probably the peak era and like any good Soap/TV Show all other characters are only judged in comparison to what came before, probably the reason why Brookie was so shit in the final few years. Also I feel the Soap has arguably got worse by the decade.(Although I will say the early 80s was my favourite era) |

Worst characters.
CS: Stella - her bestest friend, the producer, pushed her into nearly every scene. Erica - a sex-mad old woman. Callum - a laughable villain. Gemma - how she was cast the first time was a mystery, but to do so twice needs explaining. ED. Tracey - the most untalented 'actress' in any soap. she has a deformiity of her mouth which stops it ever closing; she should not have been given the role out of pity, but I can't think of any other reason for the decision. Jimmy - he used to be a watchable character, but something has happened to him and now he is not even funny, just annoying. |

Having watched a few old clips on YouTube a while ago what about that young couple that moved into number 3 in the early 70's I can't remember their names, the girl ended up having an affair with Ray Langdon, they didn't seem very good and I don't think they lasted long

Bernard Butler (Elsie Tanner's bumbling nephew, played by Gorden Kaye who rose to fame as Rene in Allo' Allo') Sandra Butler (sister of Bernard, had a relationship with Ray Langton while he was having an affair with Audrey Fleming) Effie Spicer(a snooty and up-herself old lady who moved into one of the new flats on Coronation Street. Was intended as an enemy of Ena Sharples but she only ever appeared in a handful of episodes) Walter Potts (aka Brett Falcon) (Corrie's awkward response to Beatlemania, a pop star 'managed' by Dennis Tanner, he even had gangs of screaming girls mobbing him in the street. I kid you not) Monkey Gibbons(a convict friend of Eddie Yeats) Tommy Deakin (Weatherfield's resident rag and bone man for a number of years, fitted every Irish stereotype and was terribly written. Lived under the viaduct with his donkey, Dolores) Charlie Moffit(a stand up comedian and friend of Dennis Tanner) Sandra Petty(daughter of strict corner shop owner, Lionel, shy and quiet and added little to the show other than lusting after Dennis Tanner) Lionel Petty The Hopkins family (Tricia, Vera, Idriss and especially Granny) Terry Bradshaw(brother of Renee Bradshaw) Martin Cheveski(long-lost and never-before-mentioned grandson of Elsie Tanner, son of Linda and Ivan Cheveski. Was meant to inject some youth to the show but came across more staid and miserable than Ena Sharples) The Clayton family (nothing to add )Sandra Stubbs (one of the hammiest and most melodramatic actresses I've ever seen on Corrie) Kimberley Taylor (a girlfriend of Curly's) There's another character from the 80s who was a long-time friend of Gail's who was absolute terrible but I can't remember her name. Such a wooden actress and a complete 'non-character'. |
