Apparently they are both finding work hard to come by...

PMSL. Of course they would. They've been playing themselves for over a decade with no acting talent.

Julie Hesmondhalgh had been in Corrie longer and is going great, so please dismiss the usual cries of typecasting has ruined their 'career'.

I'm actually more shocked they thought they could do it and actually quit Corrie. I'm also a little annoyed they're moaning about it so soon. At least give it a year before you beg for your job back at Corrie.

It would be the quickest soap return in history if either went back and who's to say the show would want either?

I don't get the impression from that story that either are on the brink of returning. As an established actress before Corrie, I'm sure Alison King is aware of the realities of being between roles. I'm sure she never expected to walk straight out of one job into another. I hated most of Carla's last few years on the show but I think Alison is a good (if a tad overrated) actress who just got very lazy in the part of Carla. (And who could blame her?)

It seems to me she made a casual light-hearted remark about not having anything on at the mo so she's considering joining the circus and the papers decided to make some big thing of it.

Ryan seemed pretty adamant when he left that he wouldn't be going back. That article doesn't suggest anything's changed. It's quoting something he said weeks ago, that he's starting from the bottom by taking acting lessons. On the basis of that I presume he isn't expecting a host of acting gigs at the moment.

I'm not surprised, both are quite recognisable, especially for Alison King and whilst she's not a terrible actress, the hype surrounding her is way too OTT. The popularity surrounding her has been caused by playing an extremely popular character. She was never that successful after she left Dream Team either. And dare I say it (please don't jump down my throat!) age is not on her side.

Also for Ryan Thomas having played the lad type role for 15 years means his future roles are limited as Corrie was his first job I think. I'm not saying he's a bad actor because he played the role of Jason very well just he's never had experience in other roles. If he was going to leave, he should have done it a decade ago, not after many years playing a role with little depth and character development.

But in general, how many soap actors do have a relatively successful career once leaving their respective soaps? And I'm not talking about Suranne Jones successful, just getting more work than guest roles in Doctors etc. Quite a few have came back with their tales in between their legs even those who I consider quite talented can't make it (e.g Tina O'Brien, Bruno Langley, Jane Danson etc).

Given she was at the opening of a new circus show, it's safe to say it was a light hearted comment!

Would love them both to return tho and would like to see Jason back to finish of the Phelan story

The problem with some actors is they leave a show with no other job to fall on. I wouldn't leave a show like Corrie that provides a good income without making sure I know where my next pay cheque is coming from. So in some way, i don't really have a lot of sympathy for most of these actors who leave a show on their own accord.

The guy who played Owen Armstrong already had his next job lined before he even finished filming his last episodes. And he hasn't been out of work since. Wise man.

I also got the feeling that she had become incredibly lazy by the end of her run. Her acting was appalling and she generally gave the impression that she couldn't care less.

I loved Carla back in the day but by the end I thought she was a bit overrated and to be honest I haven't missed her.

Perhaps the producers wouldn't even want her back considering the dismal performance she put into that final storyline.

Ryan should just come back and help finish off the Phelan storyline. It is very rare that a character leaves and a golden storyline opportunity is awaiting them like this one

Surprise surprise, deluded soap actors struggle to find work over here let alone 'crack America'.

When will they ever learn?

With soap acting, you can't easily get a new job while working on the soap. Most soap actors are working full time so won't have time for auditions or to learn different scripts for new roles. They have to leave so that they can devote time for auditions.

I think Ryan Thomas will return to Corrie within a couple of years.

And I would have no objections

I think he has as much chance of getting back as winning at the crap tables in Vegas rolling the dice and shouting JASON NEEDS A NEW PAIR OF BOOTS.

Julie Hesmondhalgh was brilliant in Cucumber - she's very different without the wig and bad outfits. You know it's her but she's just totally different from being Hayley.

I thought Ryan Thomas was going to be in I'm a Celeb this year? I'll have a fiver on him being tediously boring and out early before coming back as Jason next year.

Ryan Thomas's 'leaving' was never meant to be permanent.
Hopefully Alison King's is.

Oh'eck. It was ages ago. While Stuart Blackburn was still there.
