Gary Wilson

It's basically 70's make-out funk from the perspective of a 40-something stalker.
If you're the type of person who normally weeps when hearing a love song then Gary's funky love-sick songs will get you bopping.
The best crooner we have right now.
To quote John Peel out of context "always different, always the same"

It's a joke...isn't it?

tl;dr yes and no

I don't like to think too much or analyse stuff I like lest I spoil it for myself but I'll try and discuss it a little.
Gary Wilson IS Gary Wilson I reckon. Just as Stewart Lee is Stewart Lee on stage albeit an exaggerated caricature of himself. It's him at the heart of it.
I think Tim Smith of cardiacs is Tim too, regressed back to childhood, his personality boiled down to it's purest form, discarding social constraints and setting his inner selfish, bratty, wild, ecstatic, angry, spitting, damaged, beautiful self free.

We're all Tim at the core, and I think we're all Gary too.
Frank Booth in Blue Velvet, he's a grotesque, almost comical, exaggerated symbol of masculinity. A frothing rock hard gland of a man. He could easily front a heavy metal band and nobody would think it was a joke.

Gary Wilson has stepped straight out of a David Lynch film, the world he inhabits is rooted in dreams and inner turmoil. Gary is Gary, the shy warped weird guy you pass in the street and ignore, blown up, exaggerated and in your face.
Old and lonely, awkward and scared, he never learnt how to deal with people, especially women, who remain distant objects of desire, he's haunted by the unobtainable crushes of his past.

I think Gary Wilson represents that sickly part of ourselves that we don't like to admit to. I think all men are creepy, needy, lonely, nut-jobs to some extent. We all have our Lindas, Cathys, Debbies and Karens in one way or another.

Exhibit A: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2079531
Look at all the sad lonely losers looking at the out of reach groovy girls at the beach. The mannequins we project our fantasies onto. The idolised symbols of perfection, our "secret girlfriends".
How many happily married mentally stable men go skulking off to their dens when the wife's asleep to look at girls on the internet? Or worse, go sniffing around facebook to see if there are any holiday snaps of cathy or linda at the beach.

It's not a joke, it's not meant to be hilarious or mocking, ironic or smirking, post-modern or clever.

Its just straight up life-affirming, celebratory, fun pop music from the greatest crooner alive.

They're just love songs, love-sick songs. Sweet, poignant, a little creepy maybe, but aren't we all, deep down?
