Soap characters that changed over the yrs
From first starting out in a soap some characters change. Some for the better some for the worse. Some change just a bit, some are like a completely different character. Past and present characters
Here are mine. Agree disagree and add your own if you want Changed for the better: 1) Kylie Platt- went from a devious troublemaking moneygrabbing bitch (I have seen clips to prove it!) to my most loved soap character of all time. Yeah really, you read that right, when she first appeared I wasn't too keen on her ( ) even her looks weren't enough for me to like Kylie back then. Over the yrs she kept her feistyness and gobbyness but became softer and nice and protective of them closest to her. Then she got killed off.....![]() 2) Eva Price- started out as a total bitch. Man, I hated her back then. She was a me me me sort of character. Eva was a bit of a bunny boiler she was obsessed with Nick and schemed to get what she wanted. Now she's a bit dumb yeah but she's really caring supportive and sweet 3) Gemma Winter- even when she was in Callum's gang I always felt like Gemma had potential as a character but that was overshadowed by her hanging round with him. She seemed a bit thick tbh tho she was like Callum's lapdog but still seemed unlikeable. But then when they brought her back permanently Gemma did a Kylie, she changed for the better, wanting to get away from all that. Now she's the show's funniest character! Changed for the worse: 1) Callum Logan- he was only meant to be in a few episodes I think where he was a cheeky charmer sort of character. He fitted that pretty well. Fast forward to next yr (2015) and he was suddenly a wannabe gangster drug dealing thug. Wtf were the writers thinking?! Callum was NOT a villain! If Callum had of been kept as a cheeky chappy he could of been a good character. If only he hadn't of been the villain, eh? 2) Eileen Grimshaw- used to like Eileen. I thought she was a funny character good for comical scenes. Then she was she changed into a bitchy harridan, um....when did that happen? 3) Sinead Tinker- had bags of potential til she got put with Chesney and became as boring as him. I do like her (and Chesney too) but she's just whiny and as boring as Chesney. They both act like 70 yr olds. No wonder Katy couldn't wait to dump him! 4) Tina McIntyre- was good. She was a bit of a saintly character yeah, but still likeable. After her affair with Peter Barlow she turned into a hypocritical home wrecker and I couldn't wait for her to get killed off! |

I agree with all but Eva and Eileen.
Eva is as awful as she always was Eileen, I think it's because there are no Lloyd, Steve and Eileen scenes in the cab office and rarely any scenes of the "girls" having a laugh since Anne Kirkbride had to leave and so her comedy moments have been lost. She always had a good balance before and now she doesn't I am gonna go Jane Beale and the change hasn't been for the better |

Yeah true but with Eileen she is now also suddenly a dumb bitch. She wasn't dumb before! Craig might be another good one actually. He used to be so nice and supportive but now he's a bad tempered arsehole!

Leanne Battersby has changed massively over the last 20 years (
) Started being a teenage wild child with a drug addiction, tart with a heart, and hitting rock bottom as a low life criminal, before becoming a mother and wife all whilst staying true to her Battersby roots. I haven't always agreed with her but I honestly think she's one of the most developed characters in soapland currently.Belle from Home and Away is another, quite similar to Leanne actually. She was a gobby teenage girl with no respect who grew up to be a talented young lady and loving daughter / wife / friend. Still miss her and Aden together

Pauline Fowler, I don't think Ive ever seen a bigger butchering of a character in any show ever. Still makes me angry at how she was portrayed in her final year even today.

R I P Belle!!Loved the way that s/l changed Nicole from a self centred little nightmare into a lovely, caring character as well!! How the show missed those three characters after they left!!! On the subject of Nicole anyone know if actress Tessa James is fully recovered from her cancer now? |

Minty in Eastenders started out as a vile bullying thug who was a menacing landlord. Then he turned into a lovable vulnerable goon!

Steph Dean in Hollyoaks went from vicious school bully to pillar of the community, mother figure to Tom and loving responsible adult.
Lisa Hunter, Hollyoaks again, went from extremely introverted low self esteem awkward character to a nymphomaniac overnight. Todd Grimshaw in CS. He was always the favoured 'good son' of Eileen and Jason was the one who got into scrapes etc. Of course it has been widely discussed on here why Todd became a prize shite after his stint in London. Dot Branning in EE. I recall from the early days she wasn't a very nice character, but now she is everyone's favourite grandma! |

Agree about Leanne, I just wish we could just occasionally see that fun, feisty mid 00s Leanne come back sometimes & sadly I can't see that happening as long as she's with Nick!! I want to see her in a relationship where she can have some fun, flirt a bit, not be tied to someone with 'issues!!' I would also quite like for her & Maria to be pitted against each other again when it's revealed Maria slept with her sister's b/f again, as that rivalry gave some of my favourite scenes on Corrie!!

I honestly cant see that happening, esp if she's currently pregnant. Although hopefully we get some decent fight scenes between her and Michelle once it's revealed Steve is the father. Home and Away went rapidly downhill about the time Belle died, I gave up by about 2010. Nicole was great, especially her support to Aden in the months after Belle's death. Tessa James is in remission and has been for about a year, I live in NZ and a mini documentary was shown on one of our current affair shows few months back about her battle with cancer and she truly is a strong inspirational lady and her husband seemed like such a supportive guy too. Her dad was also battling a similar cancer at the same time

Barry Evans in Eastenders started out as a dodgy side kick to David Wicks with dodgy mates then they suddenly turned him into a bumbling idiot

Ronnie Mitchell and Jane Beale changed for the worse. Neither of them are fixable to me and it's sad since they both started out so well.

Emmerdale - Alicia Metcalfe.
From loud mouth, chavvy annoying sister to one of the best characters to ever grace the village of Emmerdale. |

Alfie Moon!
Started off as a loveable and cheeky but sometimes annoying character but has been spoilt in recent times by crap writing and bad ideas like making him burn down the house to claim insurance (that he didn't end up getting) and accidently nearly kill Kat and the stuff with Aleks (who should have started the fire instead). I do still like him but can understand why people don't! |

someone mentioned Jamie Mitchell earlier today, about how Martin had run him down in his car. I remember very very vaguely Jamie dying, but not how - so surprised about Martin. Anyway looked him up, and it seems he stayed with Billy who was beating him - that was a surprise - coz I only remember Billy in sort of the way he is now. Because Billy beat him up, Phil then took him in as a sort of replacement for Ben. Will just look up Billy to read about his "arrival" for first years - didn't start watching EE until 2001
