Five years ago since Carla's rape
Today marks five years since Carla Connor was shockingly raped by Frank Foster, after she broke off their engagement due to her feelings for Peter. Alison King's performance was simply mesmerising, particularly in the aftermath episode that focused solely on her dealing with the attack. For me, it was when the character was at her peak, but unfortunately it also heralded a never-ending cycle for Carla that ultimately ruined the character- particularly from Peter's with Tina onwards. Carla's rape was an excellent storyline that really showcased Alison King's talent and right,y bagged her the Best Actress nod at the 2012 BSAs.

Maria's role in the storyline was rather good, shame the writers never built on it once Michelle returned.

Ali King was fabulous throughout that storyline, such a shame as you say that the writers/producers then started that whole cycle of non stop dramatic storylines that ultimately led to complete overkill & eventually the ruination of a once great character!!
Also agree with the above post from Belligerence that Maria's part in the s/l should not be forgotten & it still does & probably always will grieve me how she was just pushed right out of the picture to make way for Michelle!! There was so much history between the characters of Carla & Maria it was lovely to see them on the same side during that s/l!! Shame all their history then just vanished & was totally ignored thereafter in favour of the sickly sweet Carla/Michelle 'lovefest!!' |

I loved how Carla and Hayley's friendship really came to the fore in the aftermath of Carla's ordeal. There was a very affecting scene where Carla reluctantly returned to the Underworld office for the first time since the rape and she squeezed Hayley's hand tightly for support. It was a subtle and very powerful display of her vulnerability at the time. |

Maria being whitewashed out of the picture in favour of Michelle being Carla's bezzie mate never did sit well with me, especially when she was initially an integral part of the rape storyline.

Hayley & Carla were polar opposites but understood each other perfectly & became especially close after the Tony Gordon factory siege!! Something Corrie has always been brilliant at is unlikely friendships that work!! As for the Maria thing, yes she couldn't have been more integral to the s/l as it all really began with her!! |

I knew Alison King was a brilliant actress but I probably didn't realise how brilliant until the rape storyline. It was so powerful and heart-wrenching. The writing was very clever and everyone involved did it justice.
The storyline certainly portrayed Maria in a very favourable light as opposed to Leanne, who was awful to watch. Had Leanne been a bit more like Maria then I may have had a bit of sympathy for her when Peter left her for Carla. |
