OMG. Had delivery of my shiny new iPhone 7 on Friday (O2 network) and have been loving it since. However, I put my phone into Airplane Mode yestersday after making a short trip and then turned airplane mode off, everything looked OK with the 4G reception being received. After a couple of hours I realised I hadn't received any mails or calls. I tried to load mail manually, safari, twitter, all with the error message - No data connection!

I have tried everything, Reset Network settings, Sim card Out and back in, hard reset - none of this fixed it. I finally found a quick fix last night by luck, I called another phone to see what would happen, the phone switched to 3G and the call was made OK. After ending the call the phone switched back to 4G and all data was working again. However, after turning my phone off over night and switching on this morning, same problem, 4G being shown and no actual data being loaded, forced a phone call to switch to 3G and then all was fixed after switching to 4G again.

I can replicate this bug easlily now, after searching the net it seems America are also being plagued by this bug.

I will call Apple support later for a way forward and let you know the response. Anybody else in the UK seeing this issue (if you dare to use Airplane mode).??

Perform a Network Settings reset.

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Good luck

Perform a Network Settings reset.

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Good luck
Did this also last evening and it had no effect either apart from also removing all of the WI-FI passwords on my iPads too

I finally spoke to somebody on Apple Support and they said they are very much aware of the issue and advising to Restore the phone back to factory default and then setting up as a new phone to check if the problem persists. If so, they said it could be hardware / sim card related. Only then, should I restore from my backup. The said, this restore is fixing many of the cases they are receiving.

Personally, I cannot see how this will work but I am no Apple expert so I will need to go with the flow on the weekend, hopefully, Apple will give some kind of advice by then

Part of me feels it's a bug within iOS 10.0.1.

Hopefully Apple are working on a patch that they'll push out ASAP.

Looks like it's been acknowledged as an issue:

It's hard to understand how turning Flight Mode on/off can cause a problem which survives a hard reset.

Thanks for the link.

I really do hope it is a bug with the software and not hardware. I just wish Apple care would tell us something instead of us relying on third party web sites and wondering if I'm in need of a new phone or not.
The case in the article says he got his phone replaced.

I hope they bring a fix quick! Worried I'm going to accidentally turn airplane mode on!

Already sent off my old phone now so no spare.

Hard reset has changed in IOS 10 on the i phone 7. You no longer use the home button but instead it's now hold the volume down button along with the sleep/ wake button.
Just in case you didn't know

Yes, but apparently in some cases this isn't even fixing the problem!

As in my case. The only thing left to try is what Apple Care have advised, Full Restore as new phone, try the bug, if exists without my data on the Restore, then new phone needed. If fixed, then I can restore my date and don't use Airplane mode until Apple can be arsed to advise their 'valued' customers on a permanent fix.

Why do Apple Care play it so dumb when clearly this problem is all over the net?

Oh well, I will give an update after my restore test on Friday.

Well it's been a few days now and no sign of any official news on what's happening with this.

So, my story continues. All week I have put up with this issue (having to dial a number to force 3g and then back to 4g to get data) and I finally had chance to do a complete Restore using iTunes today.
I can report that it has made no difference at all, I setup the phone as new like advised and instantly 4G with no data unless I make a call first to force 3G.
After calling Apple Support Yet again, they tell me it is known about and I need to swap my handset at my nearest Apple store and try out the new device in store before walking away. I have an appointment this afternoon. I can only assume there is a faulty batch from the way they were talking.
The interesting thing is my friend who has exctly the same spec. of phone received on launch day gets no problems at all (even after airplane mode).

I will update again whe I get my new device (or how many before one works OK) in the store.

Yea, let us know what they say. I'm not even trying out airplane mode yet until we know more. If Apple come out over the next few days saying they'll release a fix in the next update then I'd rather hang fire.

Your issue seems slightly different to what is being reported elsewhere. Others just get "No Service" whereas you seem to be picking up service but data isn't working.

So the story continues......2 hours 45 minutes in the Apple Store, 3 iPhones tested, 2 o2 SIM cards, 1 EE SIM card. Basically, it seems the hardware or SIM card is not at fault as we could not simulate the problem with any other sims or phones apart from my sim, and the problem still occurring even after having my number transferred to a new sim. The Apple Store finally gave in and took me to the O2 store to ask their techies and so behold...........the advisor there said that the support line has had many issues with this and there is a simple fix on the o2 account for those people with problems.
After trying the o2 support line 6 times and getting cut off every time I had another go earlier and finally got through. I explained the whole story and the advisor said he hasn't a clue what the o2 store is on about. However, the advisor did say my account has an Android data account and not iPhone account since the switch to iPhone 7. He said this could almost certainly be the problem but I won't know until tomorrow as it takes over night to update the bolt on. We haven't a clue why it is now android.
In any case, I now have a new iPhone and a new SIM card and now I need to wait until tomorrow to do a further test. To be fair, the apple person was so good and spent nearly 3 hours with me and thrown in an apple phone case for my troubles even if it seems at this moment o2 are to blame. O2 said they will open case for me it it isn't resolved overnight but they are convinced it will be.
Further update tomorrow.

I will probably be accused of being offf topic or a mindless Apple fan, but this is why I like Apple products. Yes, there might be a problem, but Apple really do try to put things right. I won't name and shame other manufacturers or retailers who would make your life a misery while blaming everyone else.

I hope you get the problem sorted soon.

Appreciate it's not a route you may wish to go down but have you tried installing iOS 10.1 Public Beta?

Having said that Apple did release 10.0.2 today to cure the Lightning EarPods issue.

Dave's issue doesn't appear to be the Airplane mode fault then by the looks of it.

Unfortunately 10.0.2 doesn't appear to fix (or mention) the airplane mode bug. I still daren't turn Airplane mode on to test it!

So let's bring this story to a close, finally. I updated to the latest iOS (10.02) last night and still the problem persisted. My only hopes were then the promise of o2 with the overnight update changing from the android to iPhone bolt on.
I can now say I am writing this response using 4g after toggling airplane mode on and off 😀
It would seem all along o2 were the culprits after many hours with apple support on the phone and in store. I will also inform the apple techies later who helped me yesterday of the outcome so they know for any other cases.
O2 cannot tell me what would cause my data plan to change just from putting my sim into an iPhone 7 but it is now fixed and I can use 4g without issues (including airplane mode).

It was very frustrating all week with apple telling me it wasn't there problem (and it wasn't) and different o2 people telling me so many different things. I was just so glad I got through to somebody on the phone finally who knew exactly what he was talking about.
It's a real shame the o2 shops can't do simple checks on your account.
In the end, Apple won me over again with the 3 hours they spent with me yesterday and the endless testing of new devices. It was funny when they marched round to the o2 store to see what was going on.

Well I bit the bullet and turned airplane mode on to see if the bug affects me at all, but all seems fine

I wonder if the bug is with the American models or carrier updates.

If you read post #20 he says it was an o2 account bug.

It would seem all along o2 were the culprits

Yes in Dave's case. But if you read my post # 19... "Dave's issue doesn't appear to be the Airplane mode fault then by the looks of it."

As mentioned in the article posted further up, there is a bug with some iPhone 7s causing mobile services to completely stop working once airplane mode is turned on and off again.

The issue Dave was having doesn't seem to be related to this bug in the end.
