I do however think she is being unrealistic regarding money and what they can possibly get. They won't get much, even in Wakefield on a barmaid and market stall workers salary. And she'll have to give up work when the baby comes, firstly she seems to want to be a full time Mother and secondly she won't be able to afford to pay for child care. So they'd be down to one, low salary.
She is also naive about Lee's depression problems in my opinion. He is already incredibly scared about not being good enough and not coping with the practicalities of the baby. He has the burden of paying rent and utilities as well as food by his own, he is very likely to break and relapse badly.
I do think Whitney has this fairy tale vision in her head and is ignoring a lot of the reality.
She is probably counting on it being better for her and her kids than it was for Bianca.”
I don't think the money issue is naivety. Sometimes you make that big step even if it means struggling for a while. Whitney was raised in a large family with lots of kids and low income. I doubt she is naive when it comes to money problems and having to make do.
Maybe she does expect a lot from Lee, to be fair to her though she was ready to live opposite his family before Ryan showed up. Suddenly the chance to have her brother around and get away from the likes of Linda had got her all giddy with excitement. As we saw though she soon gave up on that thanks to Linda's guilt trip.
As for jobs. Lee was in the army and would have skills. He briefly tried his hand at plumbing. He also has been taught fish mongering. He also has years of experience of bar work. Whitney would have to stop work of course but she has experience of working with children and bar work. She could find part time work or run a toddler club from home. To suggest they have no options is just Linda using scare tactics. Nice way to keep your son from overcoming his issues.
The way Linda went on at them about work you'd think they were two 14 year olds with no qualifications. Who does that remind you of Linda?.
