How to extend length of Intercom Cable?
newlight1

I have bought a Smartwares IB61 Door Intercom for One Apartment and I dont know how to extend the cable as the cable is too short. I have a handyman who will come and help with this but just need to make sure i have all the connections/parts he needs before he arrives, so if anyone is able to maybe give me some links on ebay to the parts I need I would be extremely grateful. I have been given some product support and they told me I need some kind of strip connector block etc...??

Anyhow these are the details of the product.

Thanks in advance!!!

For the wire I think a telephone extension kit would probably do. Then to make the connection I think you have four common options which would be:

1) Choc-block http://www.wilko.com/content/ebiz/wi.../5356140_l.jpg

2) BT jellies http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225...d1rDvLajqQ.jpg

3) Telephone extension kit with crimp on RJ11 connector http://www.kenable.co.uk/images/k-adsl-extension.jpg

4) Solder & heatshrink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMwAqV218HI

Each has its pros and cons. Choc-block and BT jellies require the lowest skill level to fit and need only simple tools; a screwdriver for the choc-block or a pair of pliers to compress the jellies. The connector size is bulky though.

The crimp on RJ11 requires a crimp tool and some skill. You'll still end up with a bulky connection too, so for that reason I'd rule it out.

Solder & heatshrink tubing requires a little skill (to solder properly) but will give perhaps the best electrical connection and the smallest connection size. This might be useful if you are trying to concela the cable as it is being routed.

Rather than extend the cable, which just introduces another point of failure no matter how well you make the joint, simply buy a length of cable suitable for the job.

From the "manual" (if it can be called that! ) it looks like a bit of ordinary 2 or 3 pair phone type cable will do the job. You can get a 100m drum from CPC for under 8 quid

The system seems to just use screw connectors at each end so would be simpler just to run a new cable of the right length rather than faff about trying to joint an extension cable onto the supplied cable. If the cable was captive at one end and either inaccessible or used some weird hard to get hold of connector then it might be worth extending. But as it just attaches to screw terminals I can't see the point extending it. Just replace it.

This is a wind up isn't it, it is identical to your previous post about fixing a TV to the wall. According to that, you have no skills whatsoever and need a handyman, who seems to have little understanding of things either, to do everything for you. Suggest you get the handyman, if he exists, to post instead.

If you are going to buy the cable from CPC then you may as well get the choc-block from them as well.

You might also want something like this

to protect the joint and make it look a bit neater.
