Agents of Shield (Season 4, US Pace)
Shield returned to us this week, and further introduced the Ghost Rider character (or rather, a version of the Ghost Rider character; not Nick Cage/Johnny Blaze.
For the returning show, I thought the most compelling aspect was the scenes between Fitz and Radcliffe. The Ghost Rider, whilst looking kind of cool seemed lacking somewhat, and the character (the human counterpart at least) seemed to have more control over the Rider than I was accustomed to seeing; still not sure about his origin here, whether he's another mutant, or whether they're going to follow the comics on this one. There's potential, as always. No definitive bad guy yet either. |

Watched it last night, thought the intro to Ghost Rider was cool, being that I have been out of touch with the character for awhile, I was noticed a couple of different things but my wife informed me that it is the current state of the character in the comics. In all honesty the car aspect wasn't to bad in my opinion but I did want to hear him speak. That aside, Chloe Bennet just gets hotter every time I see her.

Seems to be going very 'comic book' this season, I fear it will be its last.

To me it was more setting the season up, no real stand out scenes other than the opening.
The most distressing scene for me was the realisation that Chris from fear the walking dead is in it (it looked like him anyway) |

I enjoyed the opener but agree that nothing really stood out. My knowledge/exposure to Ghost Rider is the poor film with Nicholas Cage in, which I've mostly forgotten, so know very little about him as a character.
I didn't like the fact that Fitz, went from "we have to report this" to "we can't report it until it's perfect". More secrets and lies between this supposed group of friends/colleagues. All in all, it seemed very much like a set up episode. |

So who is the new Director of SHIELD?
It's a man but not Talbot. They are certainly trying to keep it mysterious. |

Oh maybe I mis-heard/ mis-understood, I thought it WAS Talbot and wondered why they didn't just show him as Director.

It could well be someone from the films who they could only get for a couple of episodes and are keeping it secret for now. |

Blooming heck that was setting up a whole host of threads wasn't it! Much more violence than in previous seasons and it seems to be setting up a much darker tone for the storyline. I'm guessing this is because of the later air time in the US that the show's now occupying. The crew's been deliberately split up presumably still as a fall out of the downfall of HYDRA/S.H.I.E.L.D. in Winter Soldier and then the recent Captain America: Civil War Sokovia Accords where no-one trusts anyone. I wonder how long they're going to keep the identity of the new director a secret and although we know who the actor is, and that he
Spoiler
It's so weird to see the team separated and the obvious tensions it's causing between them all. Fabulous effects on Ghost Rider, especially the 69 Charger, I'm really intrigued as to see where he's going to fit into the S.H.I.E.L.D. cannon especially as they're going for the new incarnation of Robbie Reyes rather than the original Johnny Blaze and he's an evil serial killer's spirit inside him rather than the Spirit of Vengeance! Ghost Rider is obviously the link into the Doctor Strange film with Benedict Cumberbatch due out later this year so it will be interesting to see how closely they tease that, especially given the Agent Carter Dark Matter storyline from that show's last season and we've got a "ghost" flitting around May and the bad guys from earlier. Are we finally going to see actual magic as a force in the Marvel Universe rather than all the science based heroes and villains we've had so far? Whedon's already said they're reflecting things much closer between TV show and movies this year in an interview with EW: Quote:
Whedon elaborated: “The tie this year will feel more of a reflection of the movie, less an interweaving plot. As that movie hits the world, it comes at the right time in our show, and you will see some of those same ideas being explored. Hopefully some of the questions that we’re asking will be answered by it and then pose some new themes and ideas for us to explore.”
Loved the introduction of the first Life Model Decoy as well, Aida, and I have to say bringing in John Hannah has been a genius move because he's so charismatic and watchable and his banter with Fitz was brilliant. Also interesting who pops up in guest spot roles, especially when crossing comic book boundaries as Supergirl DEO agent Vasquez is now S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Piper (as played by Briana Venskus)! |

Different character this time. Nicolas Cage played the Johnny Blaze version of the character. In Agents of SHIELD they're using the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider.
Loved the episode. Cracking start to the series. |

Enjoy the surprises as the Robbie Reyes version is possibly the most interesting Ghost Rider incarnation imho.

Very different character. In ways its a shame that people automatically think of the Cage flicks when Ghost Rider is mentioned .... especially when Vengeance isn't really Ghost Rider.

I think I only found out that Ghost Rider had different alter egos by reading stuff online now and again over the last few months. In a way I suppose it's not a bad thing to forget about a lot of what you were exposed to as a kid because it's all new to you again and you have the added bonus of getting nostalgic flashes here and there when your memory is jogged. |

Enjoyed the latest episode a bit more than the first; Fitz I felt sympathetic for when he made his speech about all of them (the team) losing someone/something and only Daisy giving up.
Also interesting to see the connection between the Rider and the Ghosts (still not entirely sure who/what they're supposed to be mind). Was also a nice twist with the new director too, didn't see that coming, though apparently there's connections to the comics with him (along with the possibility for his role to extend to the cinematic screens). |

This season has more of a supernatural feel rather than a scifi feel.
Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Obviously there is also the scifi angle of the AI. |

That scene with Daisy, Mack and Fitz was heart-breaking! So brilliantly done by all three of them, the look on Mack's face
![]() I think it's great that they're using Robbie/Ghost Rider as the link into the spiritual/magic world that we know is coming with Doctor Strange. His ghost isn't the Spirit of Vengeance that both previous incarnations of GR have had. In the comics Robbie's spirit is his uncle, a serial killer called Eli Morrow, who possessed him and they eventually came to an agreement that Robbie would kill but only those he felt were worthy of punishment. The ghosts bit was clever, having them not all be the same in terms of corporeal capabilities etc. And the references to the book, lots of people are speculating it's the Darkhold (Book of Sins) which again would tie into Doctor Strange and spirits/other dimensions. There's also been rumours about Marvel Zombies some time along the way as well so I'm ridiculously excited if that is the case. Also given all the previous rumours over the new S.H.I.E.L.D. boss, looks like they're making him into an Inhuman version of The Patriot. which is a really interesting idea given the events of Captain America:Civil War. Also liked Coulson's comment about so many Agent Carter stories being left unrecorded, a wee dig at the network perhaps there. They're clearly running along with the idea of a fractured team, they're all apart and scattered and hurting and they kept bigging up the Director's comments about a team that trusts triumphs etc when he knows that Coulson's team are all apart. There's presumably going to be some big event which will pull them all back together again probably for the second half of the season after they've had the movie tie-in which is usually around Episode 17. Liked that they made a reference back to Season 1 and Tobias Ford, that was one of my favourite episodes that year and they had that ultra cool special effecty thing when they went into the lab with the holodeck and got the "Hell" landscape. Two week break now though before the next episode cos of the Presidential Debate stuffs. |

Another absolutely brilliant episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this week. Fast paced, brilliant cinematography, the fight scene carried out in blackout pulses was epic!
I love the way they're integrating everything throughout the season instead of just having the one tie in episode with the latest MCU film. This time S.H.I.E.L.D. is back on the table as an official Government Agency, out in the open, rescuing people being put at risk, defending the Inhumans and Humans alike. Loving the dynamic having the team all spread out is bringing to this season, it's fractured and bitty and hard, which is being reflected in the later time slot. Loved the scene with Jemma and May, so much emotion through such a short event and thankfully they've not dragged out her being "haunted" too long. Loved that we got to see the uber techy stretchy out computer thing (that's it's official name you know, the UTSOCT!) Loved the nod back to "proper science" when FItz had to rely on creating a compass out of a needle, cork and a bowl of water and following the EMP's magnetic pulses, clever touches in what's usually a seriously high tech show. Loving the relationship between Robbie and Daisy, even if brother Gabe's thrown a spanner in the works, I expect these two will be meeting up again sooner rather than later, perhaps Daisy's going to make contact again with the S.H.I.E.L.D. team now they've come out of the shadows. Loved the big reveal at the end with shady Senator and her sadly Terregenised brother who didn't pass the test. Although why he's not crumbled into a big pile of dust by now I dunno! So, who's behind the Watchdogs! |
