Not being a long-time watcher, is this consistent with his character? It was laughable how he had a go at Sonia for mocking his wife (the way she dresses I think), as if being unfaithful isn't mocking her. Creep.

And was Alya upstairs in the house while they were at it?

It most certainly isn't in line with his character no!!

The Nazirs were brought into the show on the pretext of being a devout Muslim family whose religion mattered to them!!
Sharif was far less than happy when Kal took up with Leanne because of her past & even less so when they decided to live with each other outside marriage and he practically disowned Alya after she had her one night stand with Jason (which incidentally came whilst she was dating Gary & making him wait until they were married before having sex!!)
Not only that but the guy was portrayed as completely happy in his marriage to Yasmeen, mildly amused by her ovrrbearing personality, happy just to sit outside with his hens for relaxation!!
Now we are supposed to believe he's been carrying on this horrible sleazy affair outside of his marriage for the last seven bloody years & now just to add to the family sleaze
Spoiler

What next ffs, the sudden revelation that Yasmeen's actually a lesbian whose about to be Sophie's next partner??

It's a lame way to make them interesting. I like the Nazirs. But they haven't been well written. Look at all that malarky with the chickens last year. And now they have been dealt with a silly affair plot that just doesn't really sit right.

Exactly. It's an over used word, but this is to all intents and purposes a retcon, pure and simple. I'm sure this is why fewer and fewer viewers care about, or bother to invest in, characters any more - you know now that everything you thought you knew about a character can and probably will be trashed on a storyliner's whim and for me it just makes soaps meaningless and far less enjoyable these days.

Thank you for your helpful replies.

It doesn't suit him at all. I know they go for sensational plot lines at times, but this one is too much of a stretch.

No its not but its consistent with Kate Oates story telling. All she does is babies and affairs...although right about now I'd take her back at Emmerdale in a heart beat MacLeod is terrible.

The Sharif affair is not very believable and although, he has been such a devoted husband and grandfather its hard to believe he's been having a near decade long affair and Alya blackmailing him is totally ridiculous and shows how little she cares about her grandmother.

Also, wasn't he drinking alcohol in an episode this week with Sonia? Haven't they made an effort to show that they're devout Muslins?

The writing is just confusing and not well thought out for this storyline, and out of character.

It's an awful storyline trying to make the Nazirs more interesting.

Shame it's not working!

Having said that I think it'll bring Alya out as a character.

None of the new characters are interesting. I still don't know who's who.

I don't think it was alcohol but some sort of juice. They weren't exactly doing it secretly as it was in the fridge.

I agree with the comments here. It's entirely inconsistent with his character so far. What's worse is that it makes what we have learned about his character since they arrived in Corrie false and worthless.

Really sick and tired of blackmail and extortion plots. We have already had Nick threatening Steve about him sleeping with Leanne, and before that we had the first half of the year taken up by Tracy blackmailing Carla.

At least with Tracy I understand as she has done despicable things. But now Alya is going to blackmail her own grandfather? Lazy way to try and make her 'interesting' and it probably won't have long-term repercussions as we know she'll still be stuck at the factory and living in the Nazir household.

I agree 100%, I mean would Tracy ever blackmail Ken or Deidre, even that would seem a stretch. If this was the best Kate Oates could come up with for the Nazirs she should have dropped a helicopter on them and called it a day.

Tracy would sell her own daughter if she thought there was something in it for her but I do agree about the Nazirs!!

Didn't she try and sell her to Roy and Hayley back in the day when she set up Roy to think he had slept with her?

Yeah she did.

That poster needs to brush up on his Corrie history.

Yeah I know she already tried it but that was just after Amy was born, before she had any 'bond' with her!! It was Blanche who forced her into keeping Amy/Patience & letting the Croppers down at the time!!

I'm talking about nowadays when Amy is supposed to be the most precious thing in the world to her!!

You're quite right MrsP, and I agree with all of the above comments. It was a nice change to see a reasonably amiable, reliable couple in the Street, although Yasmeen came in for a lot of flack. And things like the hens would have been better as a long-running joke in the background than a sl in its own right.

Nevertheless we accepted them as a solid couple. In a stroke, years of careful set-up have been cast aside and the marriage is revealed as yet another sham, facade etc. Cue histrionics. What a shame.

Its a ridiculous storyline and it reminds of the silly storyline in Brookside years ago when we we were meant to believe Max was having a 20 year affair although he had married 2 times to different women in the same time frame.
