I was listening to a a podcast from this US soap site that I follow and one of the hosts of it has just started watching Emmerdale and they go into length talking about what they think of it. I found it very interesting and funny. The host is in love with Robron and thinks that the show has everything that the US soaps where missing.

Was enjoying them talk about our soap's being well acted and full of complex characters and storylines until one idiot said that us Brit's without a doubt learnt how to write these complex storylines from US daytime soaps and what they were like years ago. NO. Typical American thinking everything revolves around and originated from them.

I can see why they would think that the UK soaps are now more like our soaps were in their heyday. However seeing as most of the UK soaps don't air in the UK that kind of puts a big hole in that theory.

Just when you base it on the types of stories they are telling I can see why someone who isn't familiar with UK soaps could draw the conclusion that they got it from the US soaps. But I know that isn't the case since the US soaps don't air in the UK and I doubt the TPTB are watching classic All My Children or General Hospital clips to get story ideas.

I loved the glamour when I was a kid.

I really enjoyed listening to it but the only part I didn't agree with was the suggestion that UK soaps 'learnt' something from US soaps in terms of telling good psychological stories, which I think is beyond rubbish. Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders have been telling real, raw, down to earth stories from day one. And I can't imagine they've ever looked at US soap as a source of inspiration as they are fundamentally different in every way.

I do. I follow three of the US daytime soaps. Nothing wrong in them.

and many of the US nighttime soaps are popular here. Dynasty and Dallas were huge over here. Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty were very popular and highly rated on channel 4. And 12 years later, Grey's anatomy is still one of Sky Living's most popular shows. Plus new soaps like Jane the virgin and Empire have gained a good audience on E4.

Thanks Mark, I really enjoyed it. Especially the bit about bringing any old Joe Schmoe back from the dead LOL. I'm not a Robron fan but if they're bringing in new fans I can't complain too much.

Perhaps when they get enough US fans they'll finally air Emmerdale in the US. Or at least put it on HULU like Corrie & Hollyoaks.

There's a big difference between day-time soaps and weekly nighttime tv series. Grey's Anatomy is not a soap, and the other you mentioned aren't either, strictly speaking. They have soapy elements, but they don't belong to the soap genre.

US soaps would be the likes of Days of Our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful, Guiding Light, The Young and the Restless, All My Children, As the World Turns, One Life to Live, Santa Barbara, Loving, Passions, General Hospital, Capital, etc... Most of them now defunct.

Ah, the good old times. I used to enjoy some terrible American soaps, which where all that was available on Italian tv for the longest time. Now we also have some German and Spanish soaps, but no British soap has ever aired here.

I do know the difference between daytime and nightime, And the likes of the shows i mentioned, are actually considered soaps. A soap doesn't have to air 5 times a week all year round. I and many others class these as soaps.

I've just remembered Knot's Landing and confess I used to enjoy that many years ago. It was unbelievably cheesy but I was hooked for that very reason!

I don't consider them soaps at all, and neither do all the tv sites which cover tv series of all kinds. None of the tv-related sites (like Tv.com, TvLine, SpoilerTv, Hypable, etc there are tons of them) or magazines that cover tv series with news, articles and reviews cover the daytime soaps (which have their own dedicated sites and magazines), but they review series like Empire or Ugly Betty or Desperate Housewives or Revenge, which I classify as tv series with soapy tendences (like there are tv series with scifi elements, or crime tv series, etc).
