Why do Carter fans hate Sharon so much? its just something I've started to notice more and more. I'd find it quite funny if SOC gave the pub back to Sharon in light of this.

I haven't been a fan of hers since 1985. Nothing to do with any other character. I never liked Ian either.

Agreed.

I don't think it's that at all.

There are people who like the Carters and Sharon and some who like neither. I like some of the Carters not all. I wasn't big on Nancy and until the past few eps spent more than a year finding Tina one of the most irritating characters in the show.

I've liked Sharon at points in her history. My current dislike of her is by no means blanket and it doesn't have anything to do with other characters. I imagine it's the same for most people.

Bib: I'd find it quite funny if the recently announced Carter departures didn't lead to the end of the entire family as per recent doom-mongering on here.

Edit: In fact I wouldn't even say I 'dislike' Sharon atm. I'm just finding the character a bit aloof and directionless. She is thought of as the Mitchell matriarch but is rarely seen to be effective in this role, often devolving into a cheap Peggy tribute act.

I mentioned Sharon and not other characters also lacking in direction as the thread is about her. Only this morning I posted a long post about the misuse of Kathy.

In the past when I have brought up other characters in threads not directly related to them I have been accused of 'whataboutism'.

However, you're right Sharon is far from the only one in need of some tighter writing.

She does need better writing. Overall this stint hasn't been a good one for her despite the odd moment here and there.

I don't think it's whataboutery to point out that Sharon isn't alone in being a bit of a spare part. Rather it's criticism of the show more generally. Sharon is a symptom of a wider problem rather than the problem itself.

And to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that you had deliberately left other characters out of the discussion. This thread is clearly a discussion about Sharon. I only suggested it may be slightly nitpicky to criticise Sharon for being idle because I know you have recently expressed concern that people tend to nitpick/jump at any chance to criticise Mick (and to a certain extent I agree), but when it comes to Sharon she seems to be fair game.

she needs an affair with a younger man.

Aside from sucking Phil's dick on a weekly basis, I have no clue to what she does outside of the square. She clearly works for some business since she's always coming and going. Ever since leaving Albert, it's been the routine but meh, I don't know? I have no idea where she works. It hasn't been mentioned or I might have missed something. Eh, yeah I have no idea. Lmao.

Maybe she's been having one in secret and that's where she keeps flouncing off to?

We did laugh about this the other day. Sharon rushing in and out but with no job to go to. Ronnie is just as bad and how Donna manages to pay Roxy's wage too on that stall is ridiculous.

She is a lady of leisure living in Phils house which he presumably has no mortgage on - and probably gets loads of tax credits as she has a son to keep her in tanning sessions and pay the bills.

Leeching off Phil and the taxpayer in effect.

No one in Walford has ever heard of the welfare system it seems.

80 per cent of the residents of Albert Square wouldn't even be living there in the real world - they would have moved to Essex and Herts.

I can only assume a lot of tax credit claiming and housing benefit claiming goes on but they don't mention it.

It's a soap rule to not mention the B word....I guess they won't want to be accused of "glorifying" it. We only rarely hear of someone going off to the job centre and even then they always have a job by the next episode so they don't even have to sign on.
Soap folk would rather go homeless and starve then claim if needs be.

I would like her back in the Vic in some capacity but it may not work on her own.

I hope she's not shoehorned into the Carters when Linda's away. She's Linda's friend not Mick and Shirley's.

She does have the experience though and it's possible that Linda appoints her

Why would she appoint her over Mick's head. I assume he'll stay behind to manage his own pub.

Sharon certainly needs a job
I wouldn't mind Mick and Sharon running the Vic when Linda goes away for a bit. Linda knows Sharon is very experienced with bar/pub work, also Sharon knows the Vic like the back of her hand and Linda is her best friend. I'm not sure if Shirley will be chief landlady because I think she will be preoccupied with Phil's dramas in the coming months and it appears they will be reuniting in the near-future. However, if I had my way, Shirley should be chief landlady and I would like to see more of Mick and Shirley together as the mother and son duo (hope I worded it correctly). Also I don't want the Carters to leave the Vic because they're fabulous in the pub.

As others have said considering she went through the same thing with Angie's alcoholism the writing for Sharon vis Phil is very poor.

He's made decisions without her so I can see her doing the same

The Carters do work well in the pub and I wouldn't want them gone for good (well aside from Mick but even he works quite well as the landlord in small doses). However with
Spoiler
Linda's upcoming exit
there will be a position avilable behind the bar and as you say, Shirley will probably be preoccupied with Phil dramas. Meanwhile someone needs to work in the Mitchell house so it's possible Sharon takes the job to bring some money in
