Then have his son or someone else ask the question, not a character that should already know the answer.
Plus as said by NoEntry2k by the time the question was asked 1. the Viewers had already seen the answer 2.nobody actually answered the question on screen anyway. So a rather poor example of exposition. |

As for him asking what's a designated survivor. My take is that it is to emphasise that he is not the sharpest tool in the box - likely was told of the concept years ago, never took it in as nobody every expected it ever to really get implemented and now has to get his head around something he never took seriously.
This makes the viewer empathise with him as a total fish out of water elevated way up the ladder into a job that was so far beyond him he never even remembered that in a situation like this his number might actually come up. Hence the menial job, If he was some big wig senator who had aspirations of the top job much of the drama of the show would be lost before it starts. |

People should know that this is a Tom Clancy plot. At the end of his novel Debt of Honor, the Capitol building gets destroyed by a suicidal airline pilot during a big meeting where nearly everyone important is there leaving the trusty Jack Ryan, who's Vice President and happened to be outside the building, as President. In the follow up novel, Executive Orders, Jack has to start the government again almost from scratch with all sorts of foreign challenges, domestic terrorism, political challenges and attacks on his family going on but luckily still has the opportunity to implement Clancy's favourite right wing militaristic policies!!
![]() Still, I did enjoy this show and look forward to more presidential shenanigans. Town planners won't like housing and urban development being written off as trivial though. No way Jose!! |

Indeed not - though there are rumours of a revival catching up on the cast and where they all are now.
I'm currently really enjoying the West Wing Weekly podcast which is going through the whole show one episode per week. They are about to start Season 2 but last week they had a very interesting interview wit Aaron Sorkin: http://thewestwingweekly.com/ - in fact it starts with an advert for Designated Survior so they are clearly targeting Wingnuts. |

I soooo knew there would be a survivor, and I'm betting they're higher in the line of succession than Kiefer. Methinks next ep will see their battered body removed from the rubble but they'll be unconscious or in no fit state to take office. Then it'll be the ep afterwards that we get the battle of the oval, though, come to think of it, it won't be much of a battle as no doubt it'll be written down what should be done in this situation.

I can't see me lasting much longer except for curiosity.
The American patriotism angle might work in America but it is just annoying to me, almost as bad as 'The Last Ship'. Of course we can't have people blaming Muslims, even the show is practically sign posting that this is home grown terrorism. So the Rodney King eque police beating was just 911 porn to me. And yes, brattish son was brattish. rolleyes. This should be called 'Designated Cliche'. |

I love the Last Ship and this show is defn in the same vein, so I guess if that show doesn't do it for you then this one won't either. I think having some extreme Muslim group responsible would be unimaginative of the writers, and them pin-pointing the baddies so early on would make this a very short series.

No spoilers but if you recognise the actor like I did it was easy to find out his character. |

I actually listened to a very interesting podcast a couple of months ago about the designated survivor. They had an interview with one from the 90's where he recounted that he had 20+ secret service guys and the nuclear football with him who flew him to New York where he had dinner with his daughter. Halfway through the dinner the state of the union finished and the secret service guys took the nuclear football and left . He then had to walk 10 blocks back to his daughters apartment as they couldn't get a taxi. Made for quite a comparison one second he was potentially one of the most powerful men in the world, half an hour later he couldn't even get a taxi home.

I enjoyed episode 1 but not so keen on episode 2. It all turned a bit schmaltzy and overdid the patriotism, all that "you-essay" stuff might work over there but not in the more cynical UK.

maybe this show will see the same thing happen with the survivor taking over (unless it turns out to be the tea-lady (tea-gent), and Kiefer returning home (or probably into a cabinet position, maybe). Then the following ep will see Mr/Mrs New President croak and the secret service go a-knocking on Kiefer's door with a "hey, erm, we needya again" directive.

I like this show and its good see KS is actually acting as an indecisive and inexperienced politician and not just playing "Jack Bauer in the White House".
I hope it keeps its audience as I have lost interest in lots of US TV recently. I do not want it cancelled, dammit. |

When you move here, you grow to like the patriotism. It's a shame it's barely allowed without being frowned upon in the UK.

Yeah, well not the kind of modern unthinking "USA! USA! America can do no wrong. USA! USA!" patriotism I currently see going on over there right now, where you are almost shamed into twitterati submission if you don't comply. That kind of patriotism is mildly off-putting, to put it as mildly as I can. Once upon time ago we used to laugh at the crazy Commies going that far.

If that is the only thing you can come up with instead of pointing out where I might be wrong, misinformed or misplaced in my comment (w/o personal abuse), I can tell you right now I'm not interested in having an unconstructive discussion with you that involves answering pointless irrelevant questions such as the one you have just asked above.

i have to also say that the first 2 episode were extremely good, will be interesting to see where they go with it, especially as it has been picked up for a full 22 episode season

I really enjoyed the first two episodes, I seemed to miss any press or advertisement of the programme and came across it while browsing Netflix last night, glad I gave it a go, I'm now eager to see where the season goes.
