When the instructions on a package says 'freeze on day of purchase, does this mean you have up to 24 hours to put the food item(s) in the freezer as you can go shopping after midnight!
You can safely freeze it any time up until (and including) the expiry date. The "day of purchase" will obviously vary depending on how quickly the product is sold!
I thought that supermarkets had stopped using those labels because they are misleading.
How does the item know it's been bought? If it's in your own fridge or the one in the supermarkets it's still the same. As long as it's frozen before expiry then it's fine
I guess they are saying once it has left the shelf the safety of the food is compromised, for example carrying it home, could take up to half hour, leaving it in the bag once home maybe, so therefore the food will be at risk of bacteria starting to grow.

It's extremely doubtful though isn't it? Especially as it is not chilled for every second before it gets in the fridge at the Supermarket.
