Undermarked (in comparison to others) :
Danny - he showed promise of learning technique
Naga - so so nervous, but when she relaxed she showed promise.

Overmarked

Lesley - she was a lot weaker than Naga, who had the same mark.
Anastacia - her dance was a bit weak, and she made a good few mistakes.
Daisy way overmarked, especially the 9.

The problem was Len had said it was the best first-week dance he had seen. So, as he had already given out 8s, he had no option but to give Daisy a 9.

Personally, I don't think anyone should get more than a 5 in week 1, so they have something to work towards instead of going off and thinking themselves are all wonderful.

Three weeks worth of training vs 1 week. The scores will drop significantly next week.

They could do that, to keep the judging consistent throughout the Series.

The alternative is to use the full range of scoring to differentiate between the 14 celebs to place them in the order in which the judge thinks they should be. That would then mean that as the celebs improved, they may end up with the same or lower score as the weeks go on.

I think the second option is the more practical one, and seems to be what they claim to be doing, though the range of scores each judge uses often looks more like the range of the first option.

To put them in the order the judges think they should be could only really work if they didn't give out any scores/places until all the couples had danced.

Maybe they could increase the scoring capacity by using the point system up to an including .6, you know - 3.6 5.6. 7.5 etc etc

They will have worked on their 2nd dance as well as the 1st during that past 3 weeks.

Scores tend to go up if they do ballroom 2nd. Down if they are on a Latin 2nd.

I suspect that they already have formed a lot of opinion by watching the dress rehearsal videos. Even without conspiracy theories, they wouldn't want to give a 10 and then 3 better dancers perform, and they have to script their ad-libs.

I don't think there is a perfect solution - unless they did wait until everyone had danced and then put them in order - which would be fairer, but less entertaining.

It's getting further away from a 'learning to dance' contest, so I'm caring less and less about the scores as the years go by.

Anastacia: Overmarked (Had higher expectations for her )
Claudia: Fair (Was a bit stilted and hesitant)
Daisy: Overmarked (Favourite of evening, but certainly not as great as judges made out)
Danny: Slightly Overmarked (found it too frenetic)
Ed: Undermarked (He is far more graceful than I expected, seems to extend well)
Greg: Fair (Done with gusto and enthusiasm, but needs refinement)
Judge Rinder: Undermarked (There is a dancer within him, with decent rhythm and coordination - just needs to believe in himself as more than a joke!)
Laura: Slightly undermarked (by no means perfect, but she has a clear talent for performance, and had what I think were elegant arm movements)
Lesley: Slightly undermarked (she's quite elegant!)
Louise: Fair (that was fast, furious and content-packed!)
Melvin: Slightly undermarked (At first viewing, thought it was awful - but subsequent viewings showed me he seems to have OK rhythm and performance skills...Janette just needs to push him more.)
Naga: Slightly undermarked (She showed real potential, I thought. Could be disastrous in Latin, though.)
Ore: Overmarked (Smug, faffing and hunched posture )
Tameka: Overmarked (Theatrical, plenty of musicality but didn't seem to quite grasp the powerful movement needed.)
Will: Overmarked (Good performance but I'm still not sure how I felt about the dance. Felt a bit like Peter's tango last year...dramatic but not necessarily technically sound. Though being a non-dancer, I'll defer to those with the knowledge)

I think they were all overmarked. Some of them should have have got 4s (from all judges) as max. Just my opinion obv, I'm even more stingey than even Craig (and was rather surprised by some fo his high marks).

Perhaps the other hip has now been done, so he is no longer Mr (in pain) grumpy Craig.

Unless the judges have suddenly started doing things differently, they don't get to watch the dress rehearsals live or on video.

BIB - I totally agree. And weird though the scores may sometimes seem, the couples do seem to usually end up more or less in the right order on the leader board.

Undermarked:
Naga, Robert, Laura, *Claudia.

Overmarked:
Daisy, Danny, Will, Anastacia, Ore, Greg, Tameka.

*I was a bit underwhelmed by Claudia's performance and I think the scores given to her were fair, but in comparison to everyone else, I think she was harshly marked.

I can't see any harm in a bit of overmarking on the first programmes, to give the contestants a bit of confidence. Would it be better if the score did not carry over to next week or the judges were told to use a narrow range of scores for the first weekend?
