iPhone help after IOS 10 upgrade

Upgraded my son's iPhone 5S to IOS 10 last week and it stuffed it, or bricked as the yoof seem to call it these days. Apple released a further update later on, 10.01, but still not much better.

Told to do a backup and restore, did that, slightly better but still unresponsive at time.

Did a complete reset on friday, and is a little better but still not right.

Anthing else I can do? Its less thn a year old.

Would the Apple Store, which is not where I bought it, fix it free of charge as its still under guarentee or do I need to return it to where I bought it?

The Apple store will help even if you didn't buy from them. You might want to book an appointment if its a long way to travel. You can also call Apple by phone. The 5S should have no problems with iOS 10.

You haven't actually said what's wrong with it. 'Bricked' means it doesn't work at all, you get a black screen with a 'connect' icon.

You say it's a 'bit unresponsive', what does that mean? Also, I'm not sure you could buy a brand new 5S in the past year, but if you have then it will be under warranty and Apple will look at it wherever you bought it from.

I mean that you touch an app, for example, and it takes ten seconds for the app to respond.

i did the upgrade to 10.0.2 last night, even worse I'd say thereafter, and almost impossible to type in the 6 digit security code, was so so unresponsive when you type in the keys.

That certainly isn't right, and I don't think all 5S owners have that experience.

Are you doing a backup, erase and restore? Are you using iTunes or an iCloud restore over wifi?

How much memory you have left on the phone may cause this, go to settings>general>about

What does it say next to 'capacity' & 'available'?

Stig, we did:-

Backup, restore. No difference
Then we did a reset. No difference
Then we did an erase all content and settings, then start again from scratch, no difference,

I agree. My wife uses an iPhone 5C and it's fine on iOS 10.

Well, interestingly, the lady in the Apple Store yesterday says it's a known fault, and that Apple are working on another patch to the IOS 10 upgrade. So look out for that.

A workaround? Switch off auto spelling, and hey presto.........

She told me a bloke bought 50 iPhone 5S; 45 of them upgraded fine (as my other 5S did too) but 5 of them were stuffed.

Who knows how it picks the devices to screw up

Did you try a flash restore from iTunes?
Here's how to put your iPhone into DFU mode. The timing isn't easy, so you may need to try it a couple of times before you get it right.

Attach your iPhone to a Mac or PC using the USB cable.
Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button for about three seconds. The 'Slide to Power Off' screen (above) should appear.
Slide the switch to turn off the iPhone.
Wait until the white spinning icon disappears; power-off is now complete.
Now we activate DFU mode. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button, and keep them held for 10 seconds. (You need to be reasonably precise with this.)
When 10 seconds has passed, let go of the Sleep/Wake button, but keep the Home button pressed.
If you do it properly, an alert will appear on your computer saying: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." (The screen of the iPhone will remain turned off - if the Apple logo appears, you've been holding down the two buttons for too long. Start the process again.) Click OK.

Once you have done this, you should have an option to restore in itunes.

This will re-flash everything. All content and data will be erased! You can then restore from backup.
