Claudia
Fragapane, not Winkelman. I see that somebody got a bit of stick for posting a thread on Anastacia instead of leaving comments among the general thread, but I thought why not?
So here are my comments on Claudia. She is a world-class gymnast, no argument there. She is fresh back from Rio, where her team finished fifth (although she suffered a personal disaster in her own routine, but these things happen, even to the best). Therefore, she and Greg must be the fittest and most supple contestants of them all, and by a significant margin. Before I watched her, I thought that her gymnastic ability would stand her in good stead for her dancing. Now I am not so sure. Bruno had a point when he said that gymnastics and dancing do not always go well together because one tends to get in the way of the other. The best parts of her routine were the gymnastic flips that she put into it - and the dancing came to a stop for her to do them. Either AJ finds a way of incorporating them more smoothly into the routine, or she would do better without them. So how did she do? I thought her actual dancing was nothing special. She must be capable of better than that. Also her sheer lack of size, and her chunky build, may prove to be serious handicaps. Daisy Lowe looked fantastic in the waltz - but she's 5' 10" in her bare feet. Claudia is still well under five feet in high heels, so how is she going to extend a limb that is so short to begin with? I hope I am wrong because I would like her to do well. Louis Smith won in 2012, so let's not write her off yet. |

I thought it was reasonable - and I expected it - for Claudia to use a few gymnastics moves in her first routine - to me, it was just like her signature, in the way that Judge Rinder used courtroom props in his first outing...and Lesley had her theme tune to dance to.
But I do agree with Bruno, that she ( or rather AJ ) has to now work out how to incorporate gymnastic moves more smoothly, if indeed they are going to use any more in future routines. Am not sure that her small size will be a handicap - I think, at the moment, she is getting used to wearing high heels, which is totally alien to her. At least with most female celebs, they will already wear heels, even if they havent danced in them before, whereas Claudia has a double whammy imo, having to deal with the shoes and learn to dance. I have high hopes for her. |

Chelsee wasn't big,
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/...26_634x452.jpg though Claudia is shorter. I hope AJ gets over what resulted in the CCC choreography. He actually has a difficult job to do. Tall helps with elegance, so he will have to teach Claudia how to dance, but also to dance in a way that is smooth and elegant. That requires a lot of skill and nouse. |

I thought she'd be a runaway winner but now I'm not even sure she'll get past Halloween.

The 'stopping the flow' advice from Bruno was really good -- even with my inexpert eyes I noticed those little stopping points in the routine. But what I really liked about her was when ClaudiaW spoke to her in the Clauditorium and she said that she takes criticism well. It didn't sound like someone *being brave*. It sounded like taking it on the chin is her characteristic way.
From here I can see her mastering the physical demands (no obstacle!) far better than the expressive demands. She was very very very compact and cute. It'll be interesting to see her waltz. Can she respond to the music, be elegant, graceful -- all that palaver? |

When the show becomes Strictly Come Gymnastics then they can throw in the kitchen sink if they want. But it's SC Dancing, and the 2 didn't mix well. She needs to concentrate of some dance technique if she wants to progress.
To be honest, I didn't think the tricks she did were anything special for a top gymnast. I've seen people who have never done gymnastics in their life, but are trained dancers, do what she did with no problem. Her height, as mentioned, is not really a great disadvantage. Someone needs to take her to watch top juvenile dancers of 8, 9, 10 yrs who are a lot shorter than Claudia, so she can see how beautifully elegant ballroom can look whatever one's height. And being short can be an advantage on some of the Latin dances. |

I expect it wasn't Claudia and AJ's idea to throw in some gymnastics but the producers. Good advice from Bruno.

AJ should just give her the content and teach her the dance& cut the stupid gymnastics, Claudia can do a full routine AJ should realise that and act accordingly with what he gives her, poor routine last night hardly any Cha-Cha-Cha

Flavia put Gym in some of Louis Smith's routines. But I am sure there will be no Gym in their ballroom dances. At least their dance had a fair score. It was his first dance as a Strictly pro in fairness.

Then again, I thought that about Georgia to begin with...
Claudia reminds me of Chelsee in terms of movement (just watch both CCC's side by side). Actually thought she had the best Cha Cha Cha at least out of the female celebs. |

But I agree it was noticeable because it's part of her gymnastic routine. |

It's week 1. Give the girl a chance. She seems to have timing and rhythm but to my eyes she lacked musical interpretation. That's something we expect from all the stage school performers but there's no reason we should expect it from anyone else on week 1. AJ can help her with that.
If she does one or two tricks at the right time in a routine then the gymnastics will be fine. When she's in a lift it might as well be a spectacular lift. |

Just watched it again and felt the routine lacked. I wonder if AJ will let Claudia down in reaching her potential

Again, do you really think it was AJ's idea to throw the gymnastics in, because I think they were told to do that just as Carol had an umbrella last year, Judy a tennis racket etc etc.
You're correct it will always be the producer's idea. You could see that Judy Murray was far from being happy with the nonsense. But the dancers do what they are told. |

They did the same thing with Greg, chucked in big jumps that added nothing other than to divert attention from the actual dance and to add some wow factor for the simpletons.
Oddly it has been deemed okay for Greg, not so much for Claudia. I thought her entire aura for the evening was gymnast centric, even down to the UK themed costume colours. It was a big play on her part in the Olympics. I expect it to settle down now the first dance is out of the way. |

It was *stop *do a gym move *stop *back to dancing. |

To be fair, it is easier to incorporate jumps into a dance routine than backflips.
