Do cats ever show affection/interest?
I was looking after my neighbours cat for 2 days and it just seemed to be completely bored and uninterested in me even when I tried to play with it...it seemed to be just using me for food!
Is this normal? |

No.
Our 8 cats are very affectionate towards us & each other. There are a few stray cats in our village most of which like to be stroked or cuddled. |

My old puss used to spend all afternoon licking the back of my hand.
Not sure if it was affection, boredom or telling me I need a good wash. If cats ever begin to talk we're in for a hell of a shock. |

Is this normal? Cats are like people. They're all different. Some are affectionate, some aloof. You're underestimating their intelligence if you expect them to be all the same. |

Cats have different temperaments, some are naturally outgoing and friendly, and some are wary of strangers and take time to warm up to unfamiliar people. It sounds like your neighbours' cats are the second kind.

Yes definitely. My late cat was like my shadow for sixteen years and was extremely affectionate and loyal, even coming for walks with me and sleeping on my chest every night. My Mum has a few similar cats aswell. All cats are different, some are very needy and affectionate and some aren't so much. Others require time to gain a person's trust and form a bond with them.

No. Cats are evil! Kidding. With Cats I think affection is often very directly linked to them needing something. Some cats are needier than others, which is why they are more demonstrative than others. |

I think if cats have been played with and shown affection from kittens this will continue to adulthood. All our previous cats have been very affectionate and loved to play with their toys.
Whenever l visited my mum's house l would always play with Molly, where my mum did not. Whenever l arrived for a visit Molly would rush over to her toys, get them out and present them to me so we could play. We have adopted an elderly male who has been straying for about 15 years who must have had a home at some stage as he is quite comfortable with a litter box. And affection wise he is coming around, and is also starting to enjoy a brush (within reason), but zero reaction to toys, even the strongest catnip. |

My male cat always likes to sit wherever it's most awkward for me. Usually on a seat I've vacated or right now next to my keyboard and blocking my mouse.
My little girl, she's more independent but she does like company sometimes. She usually likes to copy what my older guy does. So if he likes a spot then that's the spot she wants to like as well. |

My 9yr old black cat Sooty will come and tap my leg when I'm sat at the computer, she then jumps in my lap and starts purring. She always sits sideways and she just stares at me for ages. She pushes her head into my chin and I give her a cuddle. She sleeps on my bed and runs after me when I go to the bathroom. It's a privilege to be chosen by a cat

They do, but many tend to favour one or two particular people and your neighbour's cat will already have formed bonds with her owners. Dogs can sometimes be like this too. They're polite to strangers but not affectionate. They reserve that for their owners.

It probably was. My cat had to be boarded out for a few days - he pined the whole time. Wouldn't eat, wouldn't play, wouldn't allow himself to be petted which he usually loves. They don't bestow affection on just anyone who happens to be there.

If the cat doesn't know you, yes, it's totally normal. You're a stranger, why should it be ultra-friendly? But some cats are naturally friendly, some aren't. And a few can be downright vicious if you intrude in their 'space'. The old right hook paw attack.
But overall I reckon cats are the best thing in life. Well, some women are kinda cool too!

i have two spphyx cats - they are extremely affectionate, communicative and loving. They also have their own mind and personality. But cats are affection to those they form a special bond too and casual affections only. When they form a special bond they do become something of a soulmate. one has a stronger bond for my other half and one has as stronger bond with me. but both are affectionate and loyal.
My two: will communicate love from following me from room to room; running to greet me when back home if i go in room and close a door will call to let me in/ or will come and find me to check i am ok. sleep near/on me lick, nose rub or head rub affectionately sit on my lap; gaze and watch me communicate when they are hungry; happy or unhappy protective of me - they will often check and keep me company if I'm unwell. Cats do have their own mind and spirit and will be more selective and choose. And when they do it is a strong bond formed. |

Yes cats be very loving, but as been pointed out, they discriminate. You are a stranger, so it can take a while.
