Looks good to me, I like fresh unpretentious food. Back in the 1960's when we went out to eat, Dad always got the mixed grill with the prawn cocktail to start. I usually got a mushroom omelette, as I was veg at the time. Good memories.
That'a great if you like that sort of thing but thank God menus have moved on since then.

I remember being taken to one near us in Stockton - Think it was called the Mitre? - for a school friends birthday. I'd have been maybe 12 so this was 1982. His parents were posher than us and I'd never eaten out without my mum before so I didn't know what to order. Plus I was the fussiest kid ever.

I can still remember the painful embarrassment of it. I suspect I would have had soup and maybe the roast chicken. Its such a dull menu isn't it.
I remember the Mitre, although there were a few other similar ones around
What!! No Black Forest Gateaux !!!

A few weeks ago a friend of mine invited me to hers to have a 'retro' meal and it was Prawn Cocktail to start, Steak and Chips as a main and Black Forest Gateaux as pudding and then, horror of horror some Blue Nun wine which was truly appalling. .
I used to have tomato soup, rump steak well done, black forest gateau.
I last had Blue Nun Liebfraumilche about 20 years ago. I was in the Al Bustan in Oman having a meal with my German manager and he insisted on it as the only German wine on the list.

Ah - the days when vegetarians were not catered for!

Bowl of soup and a side salad then.
That reminds me when I had been to a two day conference to Dundee on vegetarian food for Students at University, and of course the meals had been all vegetarian, on alighting from the train in Birmingham there was a Berni Inn situated above New St Station, I was just dying to eat some meat, so went into Berni and had their biggest steak.....it felt as though it was the best steak ever!!!

Better than a 'date' meal I had just 3 years back. He cooked it himself. There was cold cooked potato and some sort of spam and the piece de resistance was a boil in the tin sponge with tinned custard.

Where's the melon boat? Orange slice sail, cocktail stick mast and glacier cherry flag.

Did they do melon balls in port too, I can't remember if they did or not.

Don't think I've seen sultanas in a cheesecake before.

Anyone know when they had a tie-in with Tom and Jerry? I remember the Cherry Coke had some Tom and Jerry themed tat put around the glass.
