IMHO it would have been much easier on the show just to recast the role of Sharif. They wouldn't have to bother rewriting scripts and it would have made it a lot easier to edit the Marc Anwar out of the show. I realize that recasts are generally frowned upon on the UK soaps, but I think since Sharif wasn't a long term character they could have recast and no one would have really cared. Anyone else agree with me?

Maybe or maybe not. Maybe Sharif would have realized the mistake he had made and been able to salvage his marriage.

I think they could have. He's a character no one really cares about and has had nothing in the way of storylines until now. His son died but he wasn't interesting. His Grandaughter had a crisis and all he cared about was the fact she'd gone against her religious beliefs. Surely love and family come before that? Then he's a hypocrite because he's been having sex outside of marriage and betrayed his wife especially after he practically disowned Alya after she was seeking distraction/attention over her dad. Appearing with a new head would have been fine for such a crap character. Or kill him off. Whatever. Just no more chicken stories

I agree that Tommy should be recast but with Sharif I mean an immediate recast where you'd hear the announcer come on and say "The role of Sharif Nazir will now be played by....."

I think with Tommy they could have take some time to find good actor to replace Chris Fountain since he was a known actor playing a legacy character.

I think the Nazirs have a short shelf like as a family anyway so this will probably speed up the whole families exit over the next 12 months. Losing the two main male members of the family makes them quite weak I think.

Zeedan is boring and hasn't been developed apart from a silly storyline where he's supposed to be this promising chef! Alya is a selfish character who has cheated and is going to try and blackmail her grandfather, this type of character is limited once you keep damaging them with stuff like that. And Yasmeen is going to be lost without Sharif, can't see where they go with her from here. Give it 6 months and I think Kate Oates will start to write them out individually.

Maybe for a later part of the story as a guest role but regardless it should be done just to slam the door on that disgusting excuse of a person who played him.

For me a recast would only work if the original actor had been off screen for a while and came back with a different head. If the character was played by one actor one day then another the next, with no gap, it would jar a bit.

So they've never done that on the UK soaps? It happens on the US soaps, one actor will be playing the role on a Friday and on Monday they'll have a new actor in the role. An announcer will come on and say the "The role of so and so will now be played by whoever"

I recall it happening once, in Emmerdale earlier this year actually. Gabby was recast and Old Gabby appeared on Friday with New Gabby debuting on the Monday. I don't think it's done often though.

Agreed.
I also think he could have been suspended and made to donate money to victims of racial abuse or something like that.

Nobody really cares about Children recasts though. It's adults that soaps don't like to recast for some reason.

Immediate recasting is rare on UK soaps, the only ones I can think of are Clare in 2006 and Holly in 2013 in Hollyoaks, where they were played by one actress one day, then someone else one or two days later. There wouldn't be a continuity announcement to say the change of actor like in the USA though.

In the case of Holly's recasting from Wallis Day to Amanda Clapham, Cindy said "oh Holly, have you changed your hair?"

I think the only time I can remember a recast that quick in the UK were of soap kids - Denny was played by one actor on Monday, Ben took him to the hairdresser's, and the next episode a different guy is playing him. A few other times with soap kids, they don't announce the recast (a la Gabby on ED) but this is rare. In fact, recasting in general is pretty rare. I know when they recasted Will on Day's of our Lives (NBC soap), it was played as if it was quite normal - whereas in the UK, it wouldn't have been done unless the actor had left and made it clear he wasn't going to return after at least a year absence

LOL I didn't realize Holly was a recast, that previous actress must have really been bad cuz Amanda Clapham isn't great herself.

It happens on Australian soaps. Sometimes the character has a new head for a few months then the original head reappears. On Home and Away the main character was recast and the family came down one morning to a new mum. Every second word was her name just in case we thick viewers didn't realise that she was meant to be Pippa

LOL, they could have save themselves a lot of trouble and used an announcer like the US soaps.
