I have now got an iPhone 6s, upgrading from my 5s. The Macbook I usually use and which has my iPhone backup is a 2008 running Snow Leopard, the latest it can use. Can’t use any later OS apparently. The drill is normally to use the iPhone 5s backup on my laptop to set up the new 6s - but iTunes tells me that I need a ‘newer version of iTunes’. Trouble is that iTunes 11.4 is the last I can use on my Macbook. Newer iTunes want a newer OS, but I can’t install that.

I thought this might be a problem, so I used iExplorer to load all my songs onto a more modern Macbook which does have a newer iTunes. But there weren't ways to transfer the apps and I can’t otherwise sync it (and thus keep my apps) because it is synced to this Macbook. I know I can re-download the apps, but there is one in particular (the best Backgammon app by far for IOS) which is no longer available but which I want to keep. So what do I do? If I try to sync the 5s to the more recent Macbook, it tells me it will erase everything. That doesn’t matter with the songs because they are already on it.

Can I physically transfer the backup to the second Macbook (put it on a USB stick, for example) then transfer it to the 6s? I reckon there is too much stuff to send it all the way to iCloud.

Any suggestions?

This may/may not work, but first you'll find all your backups by following this guide:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204215

For Mac:

To find a list of your backups, click in the menu bar, then enter ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Or you can locate a specific backup:
Open iTunes. Click iTunes in the menu bar, then choose Preferences.
Click Devices.
Control-click the backup that you want, then choose Show in Finder.

Then, when restoring the iPhone, SHIFT click (or Option Click on Mac) the 'Restore' button in iTunes and it'll allow you to select a file.

Thanks for that. With a bit of trial and error I did manage something or other (and, as usual, I don't quite know how I did it, so I probably couldn't do it again in a hurry). However, this whole palaver (I'm ashamed to say) comes down to the fact that there is one particular Backgammon app which is streets ahead and better by far than any I have found for IOS and Android. The trouble is, it is no longer on the Apps store.

In the past I have successfully transferred it to an iPad Air and an iPad mini but I can't remember how. I have just spent some time googling 'where are IOS apps on Snow Leopard' and getting nowhere (they just aren't where everyone says they are supposed to be).

So any suggestions? I backed up the new 6s from the old 5s backup but the Backgammon is absent. I notice while doing the back up that apps were re-downloaded from the App store and installed, but obviously if a particular app isn't there any more...

But as I say, I have managed it twice before (obviously transferring EVERYTHING to do with the app) so I should be able to do so again. Any ideas?

Have you tried looking under the Puchased tab (found under updates) in the AppStore and search for the app as it still maybe available there even though it's no longer in the AppStore itself.
