I liked the fact the McEvoy told those two Irish lads off for overstepping their mark

Mind you, no one could understand them anyway....

The most boring GN show I think I've ever watched.
MacAvoy & Fassbinder were great last time they were on. It's a shame they had to spend so much time talking about a film (Fassbinder with Cottillard) which nobody seemed to be interested in and having Frank Skinner on the show was a bad move. His predictable Benny Hill-style tit-tering nonsense is not a good fit for the Graham Norton audience at all.

I enjoy Graham generally. Getting a good mix of celebs on the sofa can lead to a cracking show - last nights wasn't one of them.

If you don't watch it, why do you care? I'll never understand that logic.

Just caught up with this.It wasn't a great show.Could have done without Cotillard & the 2 Irish rowers.Cotillard looked bored at times & never brought anything to the show.

Love this programme normally but this is AWFUL. Painful in the extreme
Correct. Truly awful. Surely it was so bad they must have thought about not screening it - a total embarrassment.

Terrible episode (and im normally a fan). McAvoy and Fassbender are simply sleep inducing to watch. Im sure even those who fancy them would quickly get bored as it would be like dating a plank of wood. Marion Cotillard didnt even bother to try and feign even the slightest bit of interest the whole show, she just had a vacant bemused look on her face.

Why on earth they had the Irish lads on is beyond me. They were hilarious when they had their 5 minutes of fame but the olympics were over 4 months ago so dragging them out now all this time later was pointless. Did'nt come across well with their "joke" at Skinner.

I know its the festive period, but considering he had a guest on two weeks ago that since died I personally thought he could have said something & its not as if she had never been on the show before.

Just me then

Fassbender and Cotillard seemed about as interested in their movie as I am. As they agreed if only some of the gaming fans see the film then it will do good box office.

Had to smile at Fassbender 'upping the accent' when Gary and Paul O'Donovan came on.

I too liked McAvoy stepping in for Frank. Probably not necessary after he has spent years on the comedy circuit but a nice gesture.

Awful episode.

McAvoy as annoying as always, Fassbender and Cottilard didn't look like they wanted to be there, unoriginal content (getting Fassbender and McAvoy to do the 'fan art' stuff again?!) and the Irish lads were rude and unfunny. Skinner was treated really poorly here.

What happened to this show? Every time I give it another chance it dissapoints massively.

In what way did they overstep their mark - did they say something saucy? I could hardly understand anything they said, to be honest.

This episode was filmed before she died.

Not relating to last night but they need to move the dump lever for the red chair to the other side of Graham and out of reach of the guests.

The segment works because of how Norton interacts with the person telling the story, and the comedic timing he has when he decides to pull the lever and dump them. When a celebrity (usually American) uses it because he/she thinks it's funny just to flip someone over the segment isn't half as funny.

Half the time the story doesn't even get told, and Graham has zero involvement because the guest thinks just flipping someone over is funny. It completely ruins that segment most weeks now.

You do realise this show was filmed a few weeks ago, don't you? Oh. Please say you didn't think it was live...I mean, they did say as much on the actual show? Sheesh...

I'd never heard of them and they were incomprehensible (and probably had nothing worth hearing anyway) Still, they won medals at sport so I understand we're obliged to treat them as national heroes.

That's the bit that annoys, wish they would wait until the end of the story to decide to flip them or not.

I know its not live I just thought it was recorded after she died, an explanation would have sufficed like the poster above ( thanks by the way )
You however have an attitude problem, anyway happy new year, maybe you could make a new years resolution to not be so sharp with people, I wont hold my breath on that though.

I think Frank told a story that didn't get a laugh and one of the Irish lads said "yeah , cool story bro' " kinda sarcastic like which did get a big laugh , and Mcavoy said something like "hey try being funny your whole life "

It's essentially a twist on the format where Graham used to go into the audience and elicit an amusing story from someone in the audience and use his facial expressions, timing etc to make an amusing story an hilarious story.

But now so many celebs just commandeer the thing for the purposes of giggling at someone as their legs fly in the air, without Graham being involved. It's gone from something that with Graham's help often induced belly-laughs to just watching how amused a millionaire American is when he flips the chair. Like a comedy segment's been replaced with watching a big child play with a toy.

Oh, that! God, those nuances passed over my head. I just played it again on iPlayer and couldn't detect, what I would call hostility.

To be fair Graham pulls the lever too early more times than any guests.

But he does it because he's a professional comedian and know when's the best time to do it to get the biggest laughs. The point of the segment isn't to hear someone's story, it's to see how Graham managers to interact with them/the story to maximise the laughs. Sometimes that'll mean the story finishes or nearly finishes, other times it'll mean he'll flip them after barely a sentence.

Graham: Hello, what's your story?
Contestant: I was having sex with my girlfriend in a tent...
*chair flips*
Graham: *pretending to look disgusted* We've Dame on the show, I'm not having that filth!

It's about how the professional comedian uses it to get the most laughs as he can. Utterly ruined by these days by Hollywood stars who think the humour is in the flipping. The actual physical act of flipping someone backwards is part of the humour but it was Graham that made the segment hilarious. Now, as I say, he often isn't even involved and just sits there whilst guests wet themselves with laughter at the idea that they made a chair flip backwards.
