But he does it because he's a professional comedian and know when's the best time to do it to get the biggest laughs. The point of the segment isn't to hear someone's story, it's to see how Graham managers to interact with them/the story to maximise the laughs. Sometimes that'll mean the story finishes or nearly finishes, other times it'll mean he'll flip them after barely a sentence.

Graham: Hello, what's your story?
Contestant: I was having sex with my girlfriend in a tent...
*chair flips*
Graham: *pretending to look disgusted* We've Dame on the show, I'm not having that filth!

It's about how the professional comedian uses it to get the most laughs as he can. Utterly ruined by these days by Hollywood stars who think the humour is in the flipping. The actual physical act of flipping someone backwards is part of the humour but it was Graham that made the segment hilarious. Now, as I say, he often isn't even involved and just sits there whilst guests wet themselves with laughter at the idea that they made a chair flip backwards.
Maybe so, but I actually want to hear all of the stories first, gets frustrating when anyone pulls the lever after a few words.

I think his radio show has become a safety valve for him. On the TV show these days he sits back and lets his guests either sip water while their botoxed faces stare blankly at the monitors, or churn out boring anecdotes. Then on his radio show he bitches about them. It would be better if he brought a bit of that edginess back into the TV show and wound one or two of the guests up. I guess him and his production team are now too dependent on the PR machines that protect the celebs, but the selections in this series have been poor, and, worse still, he's allowed the guests to get away with all kinds of nonsense. If, for example, he'd shown even a tiny bit of scepticism when the pompous and self-admiring Grayson Perry was 'explaining' social life to the viewing audience, it might have made that horrible episode almost endurable. And when he's got American (or, like last night, French) guests who don't 'get' the show and just sit there, he might as well make them the butt of the humour - it's not as if they'll be back soon anyway. I think he's really got to take a step back and remember what made the show so entertaining a while ago.

I think Frank told a story that didn't get a laugh and one of the Irish lads said "yeah , cool story bro' " kinda sarcastic like which did get a big laugh , and Mcavoy said something like "hey try being funny your whole life "

.
The Irish rowers came across as a couple of d1cks to be honest.

I know its not live I just thought it was recorded after she died, an explanation would have sufficed
They made several references in the programme (including in Graham's intro) to the fact they were recording it before Christmas.

You however have an attitude problem, anyway happy new year, maybe you could make a new years resolution to not be so sharp with people, I wont hold my breath on that though.

Yeah, credit to James McAvoy for that.

I don't think the rower bloke (I don't even know his name off the top of my head. Whereas I do know Frank Skinner's) meant to be too disrespectful.

He just thought that was a funny response (the fashionable go-to response) to an awkward situation, since Frank's anecdote had kinda trailed off.

And to be fair to Frank Skinner he obviously took it in good humour and joked about being shot down by a rower.

But I think it's good that James McAvoy had the good grace to come to Frank's defence as naturally as he did, since society needs those people who will check others' rude or inappropriate behaviour.

Looking forward to that, the red chair is my favourite part of Graham Norton's shows.

Having read this thread before I watched I was ready to cringe but it was actually quite funny, James McAvoy was witty to step in and Frank laughed it off.
All in all I found the show quite funny, Graham was like I would be if I was asked to do a roll over!
But Marion was boring as hell wasn't she

I thought the best bit of the show was Frank and Marion Cotillard talking about the Edith Piaf film. The actress seemed genuinely surprised at Frank's enthusiasm for the singer and there was a warmth between them as they ended their discussion which, I'm glad to say, seemed to welcomed by all the guests.

And, if nothing else, I'll be seeking that film out ...

Re the Red Chair - when one of the visitors sat down, Graham seemed to be holding the handle quite firmly as if to make sure nobody spoiled the moment

The format is getting a bit lame really, more celebrities wheeled out every week doing their best to sell you their latest film/book/tv series whatever, it feels so contrived and frankly boring these days.
