Hi there, not sure if this is the right place to post this but i bought series 6 tonight and the quality is rubbish, it is very grainy and almost glitters at you in some scenes, the worst I've sene froma DVD. Mt grandson downloaded some episodes from the series from PB for me and played it via my Ex HD and the quality was far better that this, both versions being played through my Blu-ray, think I might take it be it is also jumping and interupting scenes! weird.

Where did you buy it from? A reputable retailer? Any chance it could be a copy?

Some DVDs are very poor, the DVD of The BBC4 series "The Detectorists" was widely derided in these forums. It is probably not a fake if you bought it from somewhere respectable in which case you should have no problem getting a refund.

You could try the TV shows: US forum as I'm sure that someone there will have bought it.

Just found this on the Amazon site for the series 6 DVD, hope it helps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series - Awful picture with DVD set, 30 Sept. 2016

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Walking Dead - Season 6 [DVD] [2016] (DVD)
I love this show, I think it is one of the best horror TV series' ever produced.

However, the three stars are for the DVD boxset picture quality. Quite frankly, it is awful. The picture is grainy and looks more like something copied from a VHS video cassette.

I thought it may be my player (PS4), but when I compared the picture quality with the new DVD release of Scream Queens (ordered both together), and the difference in picture quality is like night and day. Scream Queens' picture in pin sharp and colours are vibrant, whereas the Walking Dead episodes look washed out and detail hard to discern, and TWD box set cost almost £10 more than Scream Queens. Should have ordered the BR version, I guess.

Am I the only one with this problem?

I think the walking dead was filmed this way even HD it was a bit fuzzy.
I read they did not use the usual HD cameras but this was the first few seasons.
I have to go back and recheck these as not rewatched again yet. ?

It is seemingly shot on 16mm rather than 35mm film. From an interview with the cinematographer David Boyd

Quote:
“Q: Is that a situation where the decision to shoot on 16mm film is useful?

A: 16mm is the perfect choice. Regardless if we did it in HD or 35mm film, we’d add grain in the end to make it have this look. It calls up the language of what we’re used to seeing in a horror film. George Romero’s stuff was all grainy. It’s like looking at a documentary, and you instantly get into the 16mm documentary world. And if you take those same cameras and put them into The Walking Dead, it begins to be a believable, real experience. We were looking at a day exterior the other day, and it actually becomes scary — the moment when you realize it’s possible to do something this frightful in broad daylight.”

I now remember the other film like this being 28 days later with poor PQ.
Not sure why they put it on blu ray.

I can't comment on the DVDs, but I've watched the series in HD on Fox.

It has an intentionally grainy film look which works well for this genre. It's not what anyone would call "reference quality" but it is a good look for this genre.

Presumably using 16mm film help keep AMC's costs down too.

In HD the series looks nice and sharp, but quite grainy. When the series is complete I intend to get the box set on Blu ray.

Maybe there is a fault in the transfer to SD for the DVDs?

Your first mistake was buying the DVD.
Blu ray all the way for me, far superior quality.
