I was recently in Greece and thought I'd see if I could watch a bit of online UK TV on my android phone. I have a PC at home in the UK running 24/7 and I can VPN into it from my phone/ PC so this gives me a UK IP when using iplayer abroad etc.

Using my VPN I could watch BBC iplayer without issue but the same would not work with Sky Go. Checking 'what's my IP?' showed it as my usual UK IP address but clearly Sky Go knew I was abroad as it said I was in a territory not supported.

Was it that Sky Go app can see the mobile network my phone was connected to as being Greek even though I was connecting via the VPN? - I tried via hotel wifi and mobile and the same occurred.

I appreciate Sky Go is aimed at UK only but it was more a challenge than actually wanting to watch anything on it.

Well having my own VPN that connects to my home UK pc was, I assumed going to work

It works with BBC iplayer when abroad but I suspect SkyGo app could see my phone's cellular network was roaming in Greece.... I probably should have turned that bit off before I started the app for the first time
