When they introduce a new character, show their shady past etc for example, or when a murder is committed maybe show what actually happened.

These days it is all about the story, so to give the public reason to care about an indivudla is hard, so more flashback episodes would be good.

Some cliffhangers on soaps are crying out for this format. I think it works well on American TV shows.

Anyone agree they should focus more on character development in soaps?

I disagree for new characters, when someone new comes in it works better to get to know them gradually.

But more of it is needed generally.

And in some cases new characters need it, especially if they have an interesting back story.

When Diane Butcher returned to Albert Square after she went missing for 3 months, there was a full episode showing her experience of living rough and it was very effective, more so than Ian Beale's sudden re-appearance after his breakdown. I think as an occasional thing, it can work well.

Only if it's a massive story arc and the climax is enhanced because of it, e.g. Who killed Lucy and Who killed Brian McGonigle

HO used flashbacks as a few small scenes during POV week which worked really well.

She took an (accidental) Heroin overdose - why do we need a flashback to show what has aleady been refered to?

I think it should be about how the family come to terms with a sudden death rather than what happened. Although Emma and James part in the big week, may cover it, they might know this pingu, and get caught up in it somehow.
