Many thanks for, “It is not just a cable ..... SCART is analogue HDMI Is digital.” I should have known that but as an 80 year old one time Regimental Signaller I didn’t. Things do change to fast.
Many thanks for, “You need a box which does the conversion MAplin do one.” However, at £49.00 I decided against it.

I think you made the same point about it not being just a cable.

“The other way a VCR could be connected is via the aerial socket and using the TV's analogue tuner.”
It’s so long since I had this setup that I had forgotten it but that was part of the solution.

Regrettably I used those bits and pieces to connect up an internal Induction loop as I’m extremely hard of hearing.

“Presuming it's a scart to composite adaptor cable such as this

You are absolutely right but No, I don’t want to buy any DVDs because the whole aim from my point of view was to make what I did have work and from that exercise I gained a lot of pleasure.
With the information gathered from you all I found the following bits and pieces from my "box of things that might come in useful":
An Ariel device shaped like a “Y” which I plugged into the ariel socket on the TV.
I plugged a piece of TV ariel into it that led to the main ariel connection in the wall.
I plugged another piece of ariel into the “Y” device that led to the back of the VHS player.
I then used the device referred to by emptybox with a scart plug with an on/off switch which I plugged into the VHS player plugging the three wires at the other end into the back of the TV
I then played with the remote until I remembered that I needed to press “Input” and then scroll down to AV and the VHS player suddenly burst into life. Regrettably, I was testing it with a tape I did not know was an old James Bond one belonging to my wife and I had to leave it on until the end.
So, many thanks for all of your help and patience.
