I suspect the BBC may believe, Tango isn't something enjoyed much by younger viewers (Argentine Tango probably might be).
So as it's all about retaining the attention of the viewer, I suggest more attention is paid to the choice of the tune to attract that demographic?

Can we be surprised then when in week 2 the inexperienced celebrities make a complete mess of a dance the music has no relevance to.

BTW who are you calling old?

As a viewer, I think the music does make a difference and I also think the type of dance makes an even bigger difference.

Anyone doing Tango or a Paso Doble (in my opinion) is immediately disadvantaged unless they are very very good. I accept that this is quite possibly a personal choice. But looking at Melvin's Tango in comparison with Ed Balls Charleston, I much preferred Ed Balls but technically he was probably a worse dancer but his whole performance was fun.

If the dance off had taken place on Sunday then so long as Anastacia swivelled her hips enough, her performance would have looked better.

Another dance that is dangerous is the Rumba. Unless they nail that they look awful.

As you can tell, I am not a fan of the Tango, Paso Doble or Rumba unless they are done to a very high standard. Although I do like the Argentine Tango and many of them do ok with that.

I would like to see half of them do one dance while the other half do another dance. So we are comparing like with like. And the opposite way the following week. But I also accept that it is an entertainment show too.

Brendan has said previously that pros can suggest songs but may not necessarily get them. So it's entirely possible that Aliona requested it although perhaps with Movie week it's more production who plan it.

They may also presumably get songs foisted on them

I think they try to make sure all celebs have a range of genres and styles to appeal to all the audience (which the is a good thing for all the celebs to appeal to the widest demographic of music preference) and sometimes it means you get a dodgy song and sometimes not.

The three finalists (Jay Aliona and Kellie) all got some brilliant choices (Kellie AS and Waltz GG Charleston Jive and Samba, Jay Jive Rumba, Tango) but also some dire ones (Jay QS, Foxtrot, AS) GG Salsa, Paso Kellie Samba Paso)

I agree. And I'm sure the producers really are chasing the younger viewers, but I don't see why they are so precious- Bake Off is the top-viewed British programme and according to some survey I read recently the majority of its viewers are 40+. And with an ageing population with proportionally fewer youngsters this is likely to continue.

I know brands need to gain loyalty from young people so it remains as they grow older, but tastes change naturally, and just because young people might not like a programme now, it doesn't mean they won't like it when they're older.

What young people are being chased with Van Halen, M People, and the music from Beverly Hills Cop?

It's the producer's idea of what younger people want, which determines the choices.
I doubt if they actually ask anyone. "It's not what producers do."

I think it's just coinidence if good dancers (as we learn throughout the weeks) get seemingly good tunes. I've loved good dancers (they tend to be my natural draw) and not always liked their tunes, but likewise thought poor dancers drew the short straw as well.

Last week I hated Natalie and Greg's tune to their Tango, but thankfully they got through and that dance/music ensemble out of the way. Hopefully their prince of thieves one will be much nicer to watch them dance to (which it will).

Found it funny when Brendan said Strictly viewers may not know the Twiglight one this week, I presume thinking the older audience won't know it. I've seen Twiglight (due to a girlfriend), but prob won't remember the tune or story because the films in general were rubbish imo.
