I thought it was very good. It will play on the 'What is reality?' question and the 'What is life?' questions.

It is also fun trying to figure out who is a robot and who isn't.

And also which bots are sentient and which are not.

It's a long time since I watched the film, but the story was about normal humans going to a theme park & the robots starting to go wrong, & thus the humans having to escape. Now there was a build up, a story, & tension. This new Westworld had none. I just can't see where it is going. I am almost having to beg my wife to watch the second one to see if it goes anywhere, but her thoughts after seeing this first episode was " what a pile of ....". TBH I agree with her. I have no wish to try to guess which is a robot & which is human. I WANT A GRIPPING STORY & I don't see this having it. I will watch the second one to see if they can save this, but all I watched today was no story & over the top violence. If it carries on like that I will leave it for the 6 year olds it seems to be aimed at, apart that is for the violence.

We've seen the film I personally don't want a series remake of the film. The story has moved on into Future world territory and it will be about the Corporation running the park and whether they have an alternative motive for what they are doing with the bots.

There is also the story of how the bots are becoming self aware and sentient.

Something that was never explored in the films.

The violence fitted in with the Western theme, and was integral to the story.

This could be a great series if they play the AI theme right.

This is a HBO series, they like to slow burn their shows and gradually build everything up. They treat their shows like an onscreen novel and they are usually better for it rather than having each episode be a mini short story where it is too packed and lacks any characterisation.

Personally I loved the first episode and cant wait for the next one, and I'm very picky about what shows I watch.

So Ed Harris's Man in Black, Robot or not Robot?

Up until yesterday I presumed he was just playing the Yul Bryner Gunslinger Robot role but then read an article that mentioned he was a visitor to Westworld and not a Robot.

However after seeing the episode I think it's possible he actually is a robot.

One of the early ones like Buffalo Bill that somehow gained Sentience and escaped from the Theme Park. It could also explain his fixation on Delores given that she is also a very early model.

Obviously we saw that he couldn't be killed by a Robot when other robots can be but that can be explained (depending on exactly how the guests are protected).

Dreadful in so many ways, it was like something that was dreamed up by a bunch of "creative" people sitting around a table, we need boobs, bloodshed, shooting, lots of shooting and talk about nothing, yep lots of talk about nothing the slower the talking the more we can fill up the episode.

One and done for me.

Yes I had assumed Ed was a bot and was playing a similar role to Yul's Gunslinger.

I was also not sure about the 'Bot or Not' that he scalped until we saw the insignia or (was it a circuit?) in his skull.

I'm also wondering if any of the staff are bots too.

I really enjoyed the first episode and will be following the series.

I have seen the orginal Westworld film. In its time is was good, but this new updated version is something else again.

The work and production values that have gone into making this for me is amazing.

I know that there are others who may not agree, but then that's what DS forums are all about. We're all entitled to our opinions.

****ing awesome opening episode. That said, how can you not like a show featuring a violent shootout with an orchestral version of Paint it Black playing in the background?

Not too sure about it yet, just came away thinking Deadwood meets Blade Runner.

I haven't seen the film (it's the one with Will Smith, right?) so I have nothing to compare this series with, but after watching the first episode, I am intrigued. I think the show has some interesting potential.

I am in agreement with you, I too think he's a Robot that has escaped the management of the corporation. His scenes with Delores relay that I think (though why he deemed it necessary to take her away I don't know? Was it implied he was going to rape her, or that he was going to cut her head off too and get the map in her head?)

Obviously we saw that he couldn't be killed by a Robot when other robots can be but that can be explained (depending on exactly how the guests are protected).
Maybe the bullets aren't real? Maybe they're simulated to some foreign degree?

I enjoyed the opener. Thought it was a nice twist from the robot's perspective. Also, I think the Ed Harris character probably isn't what he first seems. I think he's human, but we don't know what he did in the barn. Maybe not what people think.

Maybe he used to be human, and has since uploaded his consciousness into a robot? There was talk from Hopkins' character of immortality and reviving the dead...

It's early days, but at the moment I'd say that it's promising.

I think what's missing from the series at the moment is that in the classic film we are carried along with the human protagonists who are the guests. We relate to them.
However we haven't got that with this series at the moment. Are we expected to relate to the scientists or a couple of the robots?

I'd say the robots cause I'd imagine a good number of us feel exactly the same.

Plausible, robots creating robots so that some robots can experience more than other robots at the expense of robots, all being controlled by robots.

I'm wondering whether the term robot should be used here though, cause (short of their programming) they're a little too human to be robotic, no?

No, the original Westworld film was released in 1973 and starred Yul Brynner. The man in black character that Ed Harris plays in this series is based on the Yul Brynner character in the film.

I have to say 'Paint it Black' was the highlight for me, great arrangement. My problem with the series was I got just about everything in the first 20 minutes & after that nothing new happened for me. I don't think I can watch each episode just to find out on the whim of a writer who is a robot & who is not. I thought that some of the robots might escape causing havoc while being chased down. I will try & stay awake whilst risking a pan on my head from the wife, hoping the second episode starts this type of theme, BUT too much bloodshed & I'm out.

Yes, you could be right.
Obviously there's going to be an allegorical aspect to this and this sounds very plausible.
A functioning society where people in it don't even consider that they're just as controlled or as brainwashed as the people they consider to be of a lower status than them.
I can see this as a viable theory that works.

I'm not sure I understood what was going on but I found it interesting enough. it's certainly something you need to pay attention to

It was confusing for me too because it wasn't always clear who were robots and who were humans. If we haven't been properly introduced to the characters yet there was no real way of knowing much of the time. Especially since what I assume were robots were bleeding, and the Ed Harris gunslinger character didn't bleed at all when shot.

I've got a feeling that the staff member who was holding a photo of what I believe was his dead son, is also a bot.
