With the forthcoming release of The Power of the Daleks, it makes me wonder what other missing/incomplete serials will be animated should the release sell well. I hope that they all will eventually, but which one(s) should and probably will be next?

Here is the list of the serials which have not been fully released (or are about to be released such as Power of the Daleks) due to the fact that some of or all of the episodes are missing and the missing episodes have not been animated and/or officially fully reconstructed (summary reconstructions such as Galaxy 4 are not being counted since it is not a full reconstruction):

38: The Abominable Snowmen (6 Episodes, 5 missing)
42: Fury from the Deep (6 Episodes, all missing)

Thanks to recent finds (The Enemy of the Word, The Web of Fear) and animations (The Power of the Daleks, The Ice Warriors, The Moonbase), The Second Doctor's list is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

Anyways, so what should be animated next?

I know that the science fiction stuff sells better than the historical serials, so should they take precedence? I can see that working for many of the serials, but not necessarily for The Space Pirates. LOL! Also, there are some of the historical serials which people really do want to see like Marco Polo and The Highlanders.

Also, the Daleks are very popular, so should they take precedence? I can see a big push for The Dalek's Master Plan, the longest serial on the list and somewhat of a Holy Grail of the First Doctor serials. While they would have to animate nine episodes, three of them do exist already. Or maybe they should go with The Evil of the Daleks which only has six missing episodes.

Should the episodes that can finish serials where episodes still exist take precedence? That would benefit The Crusade (even though it has met the previous criteria to be animated, it still never has), The Dalek's Master Plan, The Wheel in Space and Galaxy 4.

Are there other concerns to take into consideration such as likelihood of the episodes to be found, unique performances (such as Hartnell's dual role as The Doctor and the bad guy in The Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Eve) or simply filling in holes to make the greatest amount of continuity available as soon as possible?

Personally, I would love to see them queue up Marco Polo (for continuity's sake), The Highlanders (for the sake of being able to watch Jamie's addition to the Tardis crew), The Dalek's Master Plan (to be able to see this in it's entirety would be wonderful), The Evil of The Daleks (in order to see more Dalek adventures and Victoria's first story) and The Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Eve (in order to see Hartnell's dual role) in that order.

What do y'all think? Will they all be animated and released? In what order will they be released? What criteria will they, should they use? If they were only going to release so many more, which ones would you want to see?

Great idea for a thread -I was thinking of something similar.

Firstly, Power of the Daleks is a great one to do -fully animate.

-It is the probably the most popular of the missing stories
-it probably one of the easier stories to animate & being "true" to the visuals of the original (daleks, inside setting, telesnaps available )
-it has all its episodes missing and looking at its release & where it was screened, sorry, but it there's a good chance of none of the episodes will ever been found, (so you may as well animate it)

Because of these factors, it will serve a great test case if more mostly incomplete or fully missing stories should be animated.

So lets say the release of The Power of the Daleks is a "moderate" success. This might then mean the focus is on other similar stories to the factors listed above and they target a maximum of 5 others to animate, key factor: they would need to be popular & good sellers.

So I'd go for (in order of potential release):
1) The Abominable Snowmen;
2) The Wheel in Space;
3) Macro Polo (for season 1 completeness & to see how a completely incomplete 1st Doctor story sells);
4) The Evil of the Daleks;
5) Fury from the Deep (or The Faceless Ones, I can't decide)

Finally, wouldn't it be great if the Beeb said due to the success of Power of the Daleks they will confirm at least another 3 stories, which stories will be decided by a fan poll.

I dont see why they should only do missimg episodes. Id love to see some animated 8 doctor stories

I'd love them to get round to all of them at some point, however I'd love even more for the actual episodes to turn up so I hope there is no need

However I love the fact they are taking on stories with no episodes left. So the next few I 'd like to see are Marco Polo and The Crusade as well as Evil of the Daleks and Fury of the Deep. But if they do all the "popular" ones first it may put them off doing things they feel are less "popular"

Yup. There were six kids who sat in front of their TV sets with tape recorder microphones recording the audio so that they could listen to it later. Thanks to those six kids, we have audio of every single episode. God Bless those six individuals.

If only there were affordable VCRs back then.

For me it would be The Crusade, just for completeness as the two surviving episodes are awesome. The Dalek Masterplan plus Mission To The Unknown and The Savages, very underrated story, would love to see that one day.

The two I'd most like from Troughton's Era are Evil Of The Daleks and The Abominable Snowmen, both absolute classics.

If I had to choose the one I'd want the least it would be The Space Pirates.........Yawn.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Power of the Daleks and hope more follow, but it's a melancholy pleasure. It almost feels like admitting the missing episodes are lost and gone forever.

Those are re-creations of stills from The Smugglers, yes. Does that mean anything except that she returned to where they filmed The Smugglers, who knows?

Actually for a BBC series of the 60's which was typically considered history once a show was aired, and where the reuse of the video tape was more important, we are very lucky really.

One that a fair amount of the episodes still exists (thanks in part to those that rescued what the could). Two that for the episodes still missing we still have good quality audio for all the episodes (as above). And three, that for the majority of these missing episodes -including all of Troughton's (aside from the 2 missing from The Invasion & all of the 5 missing from The Space Pirates) we still have 60 to 70 telesnaps per episode:

I've a whole list of Big Finish productions I would love to see get the animated treatment.

We don't know yet if this is a one off project yet or not. If not then evil of the daleks next then daleks Master plan. No substitute for the real thing of course. For me though I won't be buying new. Going to leave until it's halved in price as to me it's not an essential purchase as no real episodes are being released. I have the CD in my missing episodes collection and the recon is freely available on daily motion.

Well it will be a one off if people don't buy it!

Obviously it all depends on people's own personal finances but I would urge anyone who can afford it to buy it, even (unlikely!) if they hate the story and have no intention of watching it.

I will be buying the BBC Store version and then the DVD.

People who hate the story should be urged to spend the money on something else rather than wasting it. The same goes for people buying the download and then the DVD just to "show support".

Nothing's going to make any difference to a follow-up apart from the number of viewers who are still there watching Episode 6 on BBC America, and most of us can't influence that it any way.

I very much doubt me buying the DVD sometimes next year rather than on release day will make a blind bit of difference. If this was produced by the restoration team for us I would think differently. Will there be any extra features? I doubt it. I wouldn't mind betting they forget to put the existing clips on it. Going to wait for feedback before making a decision.

Amen. I want all of the missing episodes (found actually, but, if not found) animated. I am willing to pay well to have them all in a format that I can show to budding Doctor Who fans who want to start at the beginning but not fall asleep. You don't know how many friends of mine want to go all the way through from the beginning but who hit the great big wall of The Dalek's Master Plan Reconstruction. They want to see the whole show, the full story, but most of them never make it past that one because, without good visuals, the political intrigue of the 12 part story is too much to survive, even in multiple sittings. I want to actually "see" the episodes in their glory rather than listen to them. I want a complete line of official DVDs/Blu-Rays rather than fan reconstructions. And, thus, if I ever want to see the other episodes animated, I am willing to buy The Power of the Daleks. (I would buy it anyways, what is not to like about that serial?) But even if I hated it, I would buy it so that I could help, with positive reinforcement, the future animating of missing episodes.

Power of the Daleks is happening because it's been commissioned primarily for a television broadcast, and that's an entirely different level of budgeting compared to the DVDs which couldn't manage more than two episodes at a time and whose sales were reportedly below expectations.

If too few people watch on BBC America, there won't be a second one. Downloads and DVDs are just going to be the iceing on the cake in this case.

DVD sales have saved cancelled shows and have brought them back to the air; as a prime example, look at Family Guy. It had been cancelled, but the DVD sales where so phenomenal that FOX brought the show back and it has been running ever since.

If you love something, support it. If the Girl Scouts were to knock on my door and all that they had were coconut cookies, I would still buy some. Why would I do this when I can't stand coconut? Because I believe in the Girl Scouts organization and I want to support them. I can give the coconut cookies to somebody who likes them later on. I don't buy the cookies for myself, but because I believe in the organization. Buy The Power of the Daleks for the same reason, because you love and enjoy Doctor Who and because you wish to support it, even if you don't like this particular serial.
