ZTE? Who'd have thought it

I was in Germany for a few weeks a few weeks ago and got really fed up with the cost and slow speed of my Three sim on my iPhone 5s. I happened to be in a Mediamarkt and among all the 250/300 euro smartphones saw a ZTE Blade 3 for just 79.99 euros. I'll buy that, I thought, and stick a German sim in it. And I did. And the ZTE was a revelation.

I've since heard that ZTE makes the phones for some other companies which are then sold under a different brand, for example the Vodafone Smart series. Anyone else come across one of these before. (Mind, I've since sold the 5s and taken out a contract on a 6s, so the ZTE will only be for trips to Germany and elsewhere.)

Yes, I bought the Vodaphone smart ultra 6 from Amazon a couple of months ago. I was lucky with the price @ £99.

I thought Vodafone own brand phones were made by Alcatel?

The current Smart Ultra 7 and Platinum 7 are.

The Smart Ultra 6 was definitely made by ZTE though.

Based on reviews, the ZTE Axon 7 will almost certainly be my next phone. Not officially released here yet so import prices high. A beast of a phone which will sell for £350 or so.

Also been looking at the axon 7 after the crazy pixel XL pricing. All reviews suggest that the OnePlus 3 is a better all-rounder though (but has a lower resolution screen).

I use my phone for music/video so the Axon 7's dedicated audio hardware and better display tip the balance for me - did look at the OnePlus 3 which I agree is also great bang for buck.

Yes, and in many ways the Ultra 6 is better than the 7, which disappointed me - especially the camera.

The Platinum 7 is okay though (and TCL/Alcatel made).
