I have an iPhone 6 from a friend that I am passing on to a relative, however the friend has only just received his iPhone 7 and I didn't want to factory reset the 6 for a few days until he is sure there's nothing missing on the new phone. Problem is I'm not going to see him for a while but want to physically take the phone away, but I don't know (and don't want to know) his Apple password. If he does a remote wipe of the old phone does that actually do a factory reset that means it can then be set up as a new owner without knowing the original apple id password ?

To prevent anyone else from accessing the data on your missing device, you can erase it remotely. When you erase your device, all of your information (including credit or debit cards for Apple Pay) will be deleted from the device, and you won't be able to find it using Find My iPhone. After you erase a device, you can't track it. If you remove the device from your account after you erase it, Activation Lock will be turned off. This allows another person to activate and use your device.

Providing the device has an internet connection it will be factory reset. Your friend will also need to remove the device from his iCloud account after wiping it to allow it to be set up again with a different Apple ID.

As others have said about remote wiping - but perhaps even simpler......

All your friend needs to do is to turn off "Find my iPhone" BEFORE giving the handset to you. With this turned off YOU can do a factory wipe yourself whenever he tells you you are good to go and setup it up with a new Apple ID.

Ah, of course, so simple thanks.

Surely, if Find My Phone isn't turned on, you can't do a remote erase

That seems to be what the support article I linked to is saying:

Of course the owner of the Apple iCloud account can - that's the whole point of it!! Your handset gets stolen and you can wipe it (when it connects to a network)

Anyone who illicitly acquires the handset with "Find my iPhone" turned on cannot do a "Factory Reset" from the phone menus (as this will ask for the iCloud password). They might then TRY a full image restore from DFU mode - but that will - during the install boot-up process - recognise that that IMEI still has "Find my iPhone" turned on and will also require the iCloud password!

If you remotely wipe the handset AND want the new owner to be able to use it there is a separate iCloud.com operation to disconnect it from the Apple account.
