Robbie Williams - deserving of the Brit Awards' highest honour?
With a record number of Brit Awards already, he's now following Elton John and David Bowie to receive the highest honour they can give.
Nothing against "The Robster", but that ain't bad for a British pop star who's never even cracked America I would suggest. And when it comes to musical influence, he's no Ray Davies, Paul Weller or Morrissey either, is he? What's he got on the Brit Awards committee? http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/evfwhn/l...b05295e3b1b6bb |

I think he is dreadful. Poor songwriter, poor singer. Never understood the appeal of him

Not really a fan but since he's won so many Brit awards then a lifetime achievement type of award (as I assume this is) is no surprise.

I think he'd be better at light entertainment rather than as a pop star. He has that cheeky chappy persona and a certain karaoke style, will turn his hand to anything, sort of appeal. I could have seen him as a cheesy Saturday night telly host for the grans and the kids. Get a comedian on alongside him, do some sketches, a tap dance, murder a song, celeb interview - a modern Brucie mixed with Ant and Dec and all the usual crud. That's the direction I thought his career would go in 10+ years ago.
I think he's more interesting as a person than a performer or artist. It's all subjective though. To some people he will be fantastic. I've liked a few of his songs a little bit but not very many. I liked the Ant Music cover he did, Road to Mandarlay, and probably a couple of other songs if I went back and looked at his entire back catalogue. It's mostly a miss for me though. |

No.
Kate Bush is far more deserving, but she would probably never attend. |

![]() It might boost sales, but I would still suggest there are far more internationally successful and influential British musicians than him, so I'm still at a loss to explain the Brits' particular love affair with him. |

If I'm not mistaken, didn't she win this award a few years ago?
The more I think about it, the more ridiculous and irrelevant the Brit Awards seem to get. |

I've often wondered what the point of the Brit Awards is.
![]() It might boost sales, but I would still suggest there are far more internationally successful and influential British musicians than him, so I'm still at a loss to explain the Brits' particular love affair with him. that's basically it, it's an easy target to push sales the artists getting the awards are usually encouraged to attend, or they may not get much awards if future if they win and don't turn up as it's better to give awards to celebs who turn up and get media publicity |

cuz he's got a new album out that if promoted well could make the industry a chunk of money. of the other acts you refer to, how many have a new album coming out soon?

I bet if Def Leppard or Depeche Mode - or even an old Brits favourite from many years back Mr Philip Collins - released a new album right now they'd still sell more around the world than Robbie ever would, hence making the industry a bigger chunk of money. But somehow I don't think the Brits would touch any of them with a barge pole these days. In fact, the likes of Def Leppard and Depeche Mode have still never won any Brit ever.
the fact of the matter however is AFAIK those acts don't have a new album out to promote, otherwise there is the possibility they roll them out to play some hits and give them an award and try and punt their new album too - if the artists were interested in doing so. i'm not sure if that is their thing, whereas robbie has a pretty simple mainstream UK audience appeal so a uk tv appearance on prime time telly has great commercial potential. i'm not so sure if brit award watchers would be as interested in DM or DL or conversely DM or DL fans interested in the brit awards. i would imagine fans of those bands to consider it more the shit awards and there are possibily better alternate award shows for those bands to appear on, such as kerrang awards for DL but those other bands aren't your typical mainstream prime time telly watching punters idea of adding a new cd in with the tesco shopping, but phil collins may be |

Wasn't it really Guy Chambers who writ most of his popular songs anyway?
Have you heard the latest one about partying like a Russian? It makes Rude Box sound half decent. |
