the point of awards ceremonies is to make money. advertising product. he's got a new album out so this will help boost sales and make money for the industry

Not really a fan but since he's won so many Brit awards then a lifetime achievement type of award (as I assume this is) is no surprise.

I'm no fan of his music but the only thing I've only ever found great about him was his lyrics tbh.

I think he'd be better at light entertainment rather than as a pop star. He has that cheeky chappy persona and a certain karaoke style, will turn his hand to anything, sort of appeal. I could have seen him as a cheesy Saturday night telly host for the grans and the kids. Get a comedian on alongside him, do some sketches, a tap dance, murder a song, celeb interview - a modern Brucie mixed with Ant and Dec and all the usual crud. That's the direction I thought his career would go in 10+ years ago.

I think he's more interesting as a person than a performer or artist. It's all subjective though. To some people he will be fantastic.

I've liked a few of his songs a little bit but not very many. I liked the Ant Music cover he did, Road to Mandarlay, and probably a couple of other songs if I went back and looked at his entire back catalogue. It's mostly a miss for me though.

I've often wondered what the point of the Brit Awards is.

It might boost sales, but I would still suggest there are far more internationally successful and influential British musicians than him, so I'm still at a loss to explain the Brits' particular love affair with him.

I think it might have been overtaken by something by Adele now. I don't like her much but at least she's a bona fide worldwide star, unlike Robbie.

As far as I know, Kate Bush has (incredibly) only won one Brit Award, which was Best Female in 1987 following the Hounds of Love album.

the artists getting the awards are usually encouraged to attend, or they may not get much awards if future if they win and don't turn up as it's better to give awards to celebs who turn up and get media publicity

I bet if Def Leppard or Depeche Mode - or even an old Brits favourite from many years back Mr Philip Collins - released a new album right now they'd still sell more around the world than Robbie ever would, hence making the industry a bigger chunk of money. But somehow I don't think the Brits would touch any of them with a barge pole these days. In fact, the likes of Def Leppard and Depeche Mode have still never won any Brit ever.

i'm not sure about that, but it may be possible. however the brits, as the name may suggest, is a british award show so aimed at a british tv audience

the fact of the matter however is AFAIK those acts don't have a new album out to promote, otherwise there is the possibility they roll them out to play some hits and give them an award and try and punt their new album too - if the artists were interested in doing so. i'm not sure if that is their thing, whereas robbie has a pretty simple mainstream UK audience appeal so a uk tv appearance on prime time telly has great commercial potential. i'm not so sure if brit award watchers would be as interested in DM or DL or conversely DM or DL fans interested in the brit awards. i would imagine fans of those bands to consider it more the shit awards and there are possibily better alternate award shows for those bands to appear on, such as kerrang awards for DL but those other bands aren't your typical mainstream prime time telly watching punters idea of adding a new cd in with the tesco shopping, but phil collins may be
