Vodafone retentions, or port-out and back in for e2save deal?
I'm coming up to the end of a year's SIM only contract with Vodafone, which I took out via e2save in order to claim cashback by redemption (which has all worked out fine, by the way). For coverage reasons, I have to stick with Vodafone.
I need more data and also want to be on one of the new Vodafone tariffs that offer inclusive roaming in Europe. I'm looking at the one of the 8GB, 20GB and 25GB SIM only tariffs (the page says all three offers "Ends 31 October 2016" - what happens after that? New better offers? Nothing until the Black Friday nonsense?). e2save offer these three tariffs amongst others with cashback by redemption at an effective monthly cost of £5.50, £9 and £13 (i.e. after cashback). Is there any chance that Vodafone retentions can match or come close to matching that cost? I have heard they have been offering some quite good deals recently. The other alternative would be to port out from Vodafone (to Lebara I guess), take out a new Vodafone contract via e2save then port my number back in again. This would be a bit of a hassle, and submitting the relevant bills every couple of months is a minor hassle too, so it'd be easier if Vodafone offered a good retentions deal, but otherwise I'm prepared to jump through the hoops. Two questions... (1) Can porting out and then porting back in soon afterwards like this cause any problems? I did have a port-in to Vodafone go wrong last year. I would leave it a couple of weeks between porting out and then porting back in, to try and ensure Vodafone's systems wouldn't get muddled up. (2) What are the chances of Vodafone retentions matching an e2save deal? |

I'm guessing after October 31st those discounted tariffs will revert to their normal prices - I'm on the plan at the bottom of the page on your first link (on a cashback deal, like yourself), but I pay £22.20 instead of £37 a month as Vodafone were giving a 40% discount for 12 months. Once I've claimed the cashback it'll work out around £10.50 a month.
I can't imagine Vodafone discounting the tariffs listed even further to the extent that they'd beat the cashback deals. |

Vodafone won't offer a discount on top of an already discounted tariff. You will be better porting out and then back in as it is the only likely way you will get that cashback deal.

Thanks Dan and Aye Up.
I've just had another look at the Vodafone Retention Deals thread on MSE (in particular pages 265-269). I think it was the £8.50 for 5GB data SIM only retentions offer that I was (mis)remembering, I recalled some quite good deals being mentioned on that thread and I guess that is quite a good deal, but it doesn't come close to the cashback deals. There are also mentions of the 20GB tariff for £12, and the £25 tariff for £15, though they might only be offered by call back some days after requesting the PAC. Hmm... I could go with 5GB but I think I'd prefer more now. So it's the hassle of porting-out and porting back in and redeeming the cashback versus trying to squeeze a not-as-good deal out of the retentions people and possibly waiting for a call back I might well miss (waiting on such a call isn't really my thing!). I'm guessing that the cashback by redemption model works partly on the basis that some people never get round to claiming some or all of the cashback they could. I wonder if the maximum cashback you can claim is actually more than the commission that e2save gets from the network? |

Quite possibly.. either that or maybe there's (almost) no profit for them if you successfully claim all your cashback. I remember a cashback deal I was on some years ago.. each claim I put in took longer than the last one for the company to process.. before they eventually went into administration!
