The Phelen Plot in Corrie
So the storyline is Pat Phelan and his mate have got residents to purchase fake properties which don't exit .... When they get all the money they are planning to flee the country with fake passports ..... Is this the story?.... Does Elieen know as well?,,, Why was she looking worried for Rita?

She wasn't looking worried for Rita - Rita said she'd bought flat #8 - when earlier Vinny had said he'd sold #8 to Russ (the guy who'd provided the fake passports). Not only are they selling non-existent flats - they're selling the same non-existent flats to multiple buyers ... and it seems that at last the penny has fallen with the (as Vinny called her) daft bint!

Yes they are planning on fleeing. And no, Eileen doesn't know about it, although she does seem to be having suspicions about Vinny due to him having a go at her the other night for buying tiles. Not that it stops her still being fooled and talked round by Phelan.

She had a look of surprise as she finally realised her instincts were right. Selling the same flat (number 8) to two different people would ring alarm bells especially if you had doubt already. Quote:

They are taking a significant 'reservation fee' (14k has been mentioned) for each flat sold and it is possible that they are selling the same plots to multiple buyers but that might not be the case - after all Vinny didn't know that Todd was 'closing the deal' with Rita on Plot 8 when he plucked that number out of thin air to say the guy he was talking to wanted it. But it has made Eileen suspicious again.
Once they have sold as many plots as possible, Vinny and Phelan intend to flee with all the money before they have outlayed anything re actually building - that is why Vinny was so angry that Eileen had committed money on tiles on Monday. Originally they would both have been blamed but now, i guess they have the option of letting Todd be the fall guy for it. Todd believes that Vinny will flee, taking all the blame so he and Phelan look like they've been as duped as the buyers but actually have their share of the money hidden away somewhere. Hope that helps. |

![]() Eileen has had alarm bells ringing for the last couple of episodes. When she challenged Vinny about the progress he said he was off to do interviews all day with constructors. She found out Tim had dropped him off at the casino so she grabbed Phelan to go catch him out, when they got there Vinny was with the guy who was providing the fake passports for Vinny and Phelan to do a runner. Vinny pretended he was a buyer for flat #8 and Phelan agreed. Eileen went away with her tail between her legs, but later in the Rovers she found out Rita was buying #8 for Jenny, hence the worried look on Eileen's face. |

I'm finding it difficult to believe that anyone would hand over a large deposit for a property without involving a solicitor. What guarantee do any of them have? All we have seen is people agreeing to pay a deposit but receiving nothing, no reservation documents. And how can they sell something they don't own? Surely the council must know what is going on as Vinnie & co are selling the flats openly. I am quite baffled by the semantics of this storyline.
PS And I do watch every episode - Corrie is the only soap I watch. |

I've missed quite a lot of corrie over the past few months and am usually doing something else at the same time it is on (cooking etc) but don'( really think it has been a hard plot to follow.
Pretty much every scene Vinny has been in with Phelan they have discussed the con in one way or another, from getting Sally onside with the Council, to talking to Alex about how the site is used now, to 'kidnapping' Eileen and taking her to a Spa so Todd couldn't tell her about what was happening, to them luring Todd out to the site, discussing how they'd have to kill him if he didn't come on board and then explaining it all to him. Phelan even then went through it all again with Todd, including that Vinny would kill him if he blew the whistle when he wanted to pull out last week. So, some might not have got it which is fair enough, but i do think you'd have too have missed a lot of episodes or segments not to understand it at all. |

You would think that someone would notice that there has been no work taking place at all.
Who actually owns this building that is supposedly to be converted? Certainly not conmen Phelan & Vinney. |

PS And I do watch every episode - Corrie is the only soap I watch. It's not that unusual to put a holding deposit down without involving a Solicitor - i did myself when i bought my house from plans. But the difference is that it was only 100 pounds and it was a nationally known builders that have been operating for decades and most of the houses were already up. No serious money was given until completion of the contract (which Solicitors and of course Mortgage companies were involved with) by which stage the house had been finished. That people are handing over thousands of pounds without solicitors being involved, or a mortgage in place where the bank would want to see a show home at least, plus go over planning permission etc does beggar belief. Also the idea that somebody as intelligent as Todd wouldn't know that a Police investigation would happen as soon as people realised they'd been conned and they would look at everybody einvoled finances so where does he think the money he is supposedly making would be so he could access it without the Police finding it? |

He twigged to the con because when he was working at the solicitors in London they dealt with a similar case. Yet he still seems to think that Jason is not going to lose his inheritance and that Sarah will get her £14k deposit back. Is this what happened in the other case - if not (and from what Todd said the money there was gone) why does he think this is different? |

I find it amazing that Eileen has become an interior designer overnight, and can confidently spend £30,000 on tiles at the drop of a hat.
I worked for a company that did similar refurbishments (not the fleecing bit though)! and wouldn't have done that even after a couple of years without getting everything double-checked by a fellow colleague first. |
