Not sure really. Prob not much will change. As someone who has no great inside knowledge of the industry I find it hard to understand some contracts.
At the time the GAA said they went with Sky because of no HD on TV3 and the international aspect that Sky could bring. They said it was not about money!!!
TV3 now have HD so why not give them the same package as Sky if they want it and let Sky have the British and whatever other international rights they have now?
Another thing I do not know is how good Sky's viewing figures are. How happy are they with them? How low would they have to go for Sky to want pull out?

GAA should expand GAA Go to the UK instead of Sky Sports

I hope TV3 and Eir Sport can take the rights from Sky Sports in Ireland. They also take more live rights from the stale broadcaster, RTEtv.

TV 3 ok but it needs to go HD on Saorview. Certainly not Eir Sports as its a niche channel here in NI with I guess very few subscribers. It is obviously not part of a broadband package here in NI.

I hope no pay tv operator gets the rights. The GAA as an amateur organisation should be available FTA to all members. Give Sky Sports non exclusive rights for the UK if need be.

Sky Sports should be given full non exclusive right with RTÉ and TV3/UTV being host broadcasters in Ireland... give everyone a piece of the action and keep the games free for people in Ireland and give full exposure in the UK.

What a load of poppycock. Plenty of amateurs organisations out there that have to be on pay TV channels.

You clearly have no idea about how the GAA works. Do tell me why the GAA have to be on pay tv in Ireland. If you can't then please take your poppycock and keep going.

They don't have to but by the same token please tell me why they have to be on free TV.

The BDO is am amateur darts organisation. Half of its showpiece event is on subscription television. No different.

As I said earlier you have no idea about what the GAA is in Ireland. Comparing it to the BDO. Oh please.

Erm, they are both amateur organisations so the comparison is perfectly valid.

Erm, do a little research into the GAA and the reach it has in Ireland. No darts organisation would be in the same league, especially a tin pot group like the BDO. The fact that you think they can be compared is ludicrous and again shows you have no idea what you are on about.

With respect, instead of going back and forth with ranting about the lack of understanding, why not enlighten us so this apparent lack of understanding doesn't consume the thread and get it locked for going OT?

Per TV Sports Markets:

"RTÉ and Sky set to retain GAA rights - report"

"Ireland’s Gaelic Athletic Association is set to strike a five-year extension to its rights deals with public-service broadcaster RTÉ and pay-television broadcaster Sky, according to the Irish Independent."

Note: 5 year deal, rights previously sold in 3 year deals.

So where does this leave Premier Sports who have been covering GAA for couple of years?

They will probably continue to show the RTE games as before.

Pretty much as you were. The only difference being RTE has exclusive radio rights and Newstalk lose out. I'm surprised SKY didn't try and get a fairer share of the games, aside from the shared games with RTE, the rest of their picks are fairly cack.

Would you not classify GAA in the UK as the exact kind of niche sport that you so like to comment about at length on here?

They probably did, but the GAA themselves have no interest in expanding the number of games on pay-TV, regarding the current balance as that which would least alienate their members. To answer the final post, GAA in the UK is undoubtedly a niche sport, but as most of the games are played in the soccer close season, it is legitimate to ask what platform would maximise the potential audience - a useful Sunday afternoon filler for the BBC, as is already the case in NI?
