“The nation’s favourite singing show moves into its spectacular live show phase this weekend and in a new twist, song themes for the series will be determined by an onstage, mechanical jukebox.

Each Sunday, after the gut-wrenching eliminations, host Dermot O’Leary will be joined by a special guest who will spin the jukebox wheel to reveal to the remaining contestants and the viewers at home the following week’s theme. Themes up for grabs include Oscars, Boy Band vs Girl Band, Disco, Motown, 80’s, Divas and Louis Loves (the Louis Walsh collection).

This week’s theme is ‘Express Yourself’ where each of the 12 contestants will perform a song that showcases who they are as artists in the hope of sealing their place in the competition for another week.”

NO to 80's, motown and disco. Louis Loves (the Louis Walsh collection) could be interesting!

thing is there are loads of great songs from the 80s, this show seems limited to picking songs from "now thats what i call the 80s"

same with motown and even disco altho its a bit tougher

10 of the jukebox wheel landing positions are Whitney Houston and 10 are Mariah Carey. 7 are Elton John and 7 are the Beatles. 25 are Fleur East.

Would be great if they got Jenny Powell to come on as the guest each week and spin it

I don't see this as a twist at all. It would be more interesting if the contestant who survives the bottom two gets to pick the following week's theme. This is just a way of announcing the next dreadful theme live.

Just when you thought this couldn't get any more cringeworthy.

Might as well bring on the Tipping Point machine. Last contestant standing chooses the theme.

if they were going to try and incorporate an aspect of another game show they could at least have made it "the hunger games"

I'm not sure why they think a prerequisite of a modern pop star is to be able to sing lots of old fashioned songs.

Themes are one of the biggest issues with this show. They should scrap them. Allow the acts to show what sort of artist they would be. The show is obsessed with people being versatile. It's just not realistic, unless maybe you're Beyonce. When in the real world is someone going to be expected to sing a mix of motown, disco, rock etc? It's just stupid. Also, I suspect it's the reason why we end up with such rubbish winners and why so many people on the show end up flopping. They spend the their time on the show belting out Whitney, Mariah, motown, disco, rock etc and the public vote for them based on this...yet when they win the show the music they release is nothing at all resembling what they were singing on the show, which it obviously wouldn't be. They should let acts pick whatever they want each week, let us see them at their best and let us see what sort of artist they are and let us vote based on that. I don't really like the live shows...auditions are best when the act walks in for the first time and they are themselves. Once it gets to the live shows they're no longer allowed to be themselves...they have to be what the show wants them to be, given ridiculous outfits to wear, ballerinas dancing round them on the stage, outlandish props. The live shows can take a decent artist and turn them into a cabaret act.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Adele isn't suddenly releasing rock songs or songs from Grease is she? I would go even further and make them only sing recent songs as well.

care to explain Ozzy then why if the songs that have been released for week one are true that in a week where we have a theme that would allow contestants to sing basically anything they want we have 5 out of 8 songs that have been used a few times on the various versions of XF, one of them a whitney song, and two of the others are by acts managed by SYCO

i dont know how many times i have said this, there is zero point getting rid of themes if the show continues to select from a limited song book as acts dont have an unlimited choice anyway

So this is the amazing "thing that's never been done before"?

Pardon me if I'm a bit underwhelmed.

That just backs up Ozzy's point even more. In a week where they can sing any song they want they are all singing recycled crap from previous years.

no it doesn't as his post was about getting rid of themes and that will solve the problem, whereas what i posted shows that getting rid of themes wont fix the problem of bad song choices

go look at the themes used on last years live shows, there wasn't a single theme that forced any act to sing a song from a specific genre, period or artist but we still got loads of older songs or the usual whitney dross, how can that be the fault of having themes ?

Fair enough. Goes back to my point that for some reason Cowell thinks that a prerequisite of a modern pop star is singing old songs. I'm sure he has a reason for this, just not sure what it is.

his reason for it is that your typical saturday night TV audience dont want to hear modern chart music, they want to hear people singing songs they know and are familiar with

as well as SYCO being cheap when it comes to paying royalties

Really?

There are plenty of modern songs that everyone knows that they could sing without having to resort to Whitney or Michael Jackson.

Unless it's changed dramatically I found figures from 2011 that suggest that 55% of the audience are under 44. I think that demographic is probably familiar with more recent stuff than the crap they make them sing.
