Hi guys, after much searching around I have finally realised it is my phone that struggles with 4g speeds,I am looking now to find an android phone that comes recommended as being very good at connecting to 4g,does anyone know of other Androids that are very good at getting and holding 4g signal,I live in a fairly large city and EE,Vodafone,o2 all show as excellent coverage but that's no good to me as I am using a Galaxy Note 3 (old I know) which apparently is pretty rubbish in picking up a good 4g signal,so any suggestions would be appreciated, many thanks in advance

Hi,

Avoid the Samsung S6, it does not have good reception.

The Samsung S7 (Edge) is extremely keen on staying on 4g, even when the signal is very weak. If you drop to 2g or 3g, it will rapidly reconnect to 4g when available. Another advantage of the S7 is the very high speed of the device in general.

4g speed is highly variable between networks. In cities, EE have the highest average 4g speeds by a large margin, but there are obviously areas of poor coverage on all networks, and EE is no exception. Test a pay as you go SIM if you need to ascertain coverage, since estimated coverage maps are often unhelpful.

Problem networks...

giffgaff have relatively good 4g coverage (as per O2), but speeds are very much lower than most networks, particularly in busy city areas where the service can appear highly congested. Speeds on giffgaff are a fraction of those on O2 SIMs. In London, typical 4g speeds on giffgaff average about 10 times lower than O2, and probably about 30 times lower than EE.

Samsung J3 seems very good and able to hold on to 4g longer than my old Lg g4 on id network.

Huawei P9 could be worth considering with its virtual triple antenna system.

The Moto X Play isnt great in weak signal areas, it's actually worse than some Samsung devices.

I'll agree that the Moto X Play doesn't hold 4g signal at all well in the time I had one. Though EE 4G had much improved in our rural area the X Play nearly needs LoS to mast to keep 4G reception - just my experience. Can't comment on Samsung phones though.

Just got a galaxy s7 and it's good at getting 4G, easily as good if not better than my old iPhone 6S(which was also brilliant at getting 4G signals)

The Honor 8 is a cheaper version, but other Huawei/Honor phones also have multiple antennas and switch as and when needed. I believe the cheaper Honor 5X and 5C are set up the same, although the 5X only has single-band (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi. The Huawei P8 and Mate S are also of the same design.

I have to say that all Huawei phones seem to have exceptional signal, and that also includes the Nexus 6P. Oh, and their mobile broadband products.

(I wonder how good the HTC-made Pixel phones are in comparison to the 6P)

I found the 6P to be excellent with the Honor 7 very good and the Huawei P9 the worst of the three but still the best.

I also recommend you avoid Samsung S6's (and previous Samsungs, like my S4). My S4 will sometimes not even hold on to 3G or 4G, instead jumping to EDGE/GPRS when it feels like it.

Hope the Samsung S7 is better - though from what I have heard, it does seem to be.

And as mentioned, definitely avoid Giffgaff if speed is your main priority. Giffgaff are very low down on the priority system on the O2 network - my recently upgraded CTIL mast gives 1Mbps 3G and 3Mbps 4G on Giffgaff (O2 and Vodafone would likely be much better).

It is, see my post above.

In our house the signal isn't great(all kinds of iPhone up to the 6S) and my S7 is just as good if not better, things seem to load up quicker on the Internet especially videos on YouTube etc. Very happy with the signal on my S7.

Edited to add in on Three network

Never had a problem with the S6 getting 4G, even in thick woodland with a low signal
