The Q&A on NYC today the hosts asked Capaldi about leaving, and he repeated that he has absolutely no plans to leave the show.

Hooray! He must stay through Series 11 at least.

Excellent, and this probably means he has had discussions with Chibnall who still wants him as The Doctor if he wishes to stay.

A shame. His Doctor isn't working. I doubt even Chibnall can turn it around. So much for the fresh start in 2018!

Excellent news - and much more direct than "taking it one year at a time - he's far and away the best thing about the show at present.

This is brilliant news if true. There's really no need for Capaldi to go just because Moffat is, and it will be interesting to see how a new showrunner will take him in new directions, after the immediate predecessors were pretty much the products of their showrunners.

Chibnall's era is looking towards a brighter start.

I think that's a really important point, Lord Smexy. It was interesting to see the enormous changes made to his personality between season 8 and 9. Perhaps too little too late (more than a million had already switched off) but a step in the right direction none the less.

Perhaps Capaldi's Doctor will go through the slow transformation on screen that Colin Baker's Doctor was never given the time to do. My preference is still that Capaldi goes at the end of season 10 but, failing that, further revamps of his personality would be good.

Really means very little.

"Plans" can change very very quickly (and can be taken out of your hands).

He did not say No I am not leaving or I don't want to leave.

It's no more then a stock answer to a stock question

And, to be fair, he isn't going anywhere for now. He'll still be the Doctor in 2017 and that may include the Christmas episode in 2017.

Absolutely agree with this. I hope he is being honest though as they've all said they weren't leaving before only for that not to be the case.

I'll believe it because I want to. Love him as the Doctor, he just needs better scripts to work with.

rRom another journalist who interviewed him.

Hey guess what? Capaldi confirmed showrunners asked him to stick around for another season (but he hasn't signed on quite yet)

Sigh. Indeed. So all the mainstream audience see is the 'same old, same old' that they've largely lost interest in, and Chibnall's chance to reinvigorate the show and the ratings disappears before he's even written a word if Capaldi does stay for series 11.

For me personally, it's not that I entirely dislike Capaldi in the role, but I would want a clean break from the Moffat era once he's finally out the door, with a Doctor that isn't already associated with a ratings drop era.

That was said months ago. Capaldi, Chibnall, and Moffat have all been making these sorts of comments for some months now.

The only 'confirmed' statement that will matter is the one that says for definite 'Capaldi stays' or 'Capaldi leaves' for series 11.

I don't think it means anything. Tennant made similar noises about staying on for Series 5 and Smith for Series 8 and we know what happened there.

I think Capaldi is a great Doctor but I genuinely will be shocked if he makes it into Chibnall's era.

Like any government minister caught under the spotlight when the going gets tough...

I remember Tennant talking about "the next series" (meaning series 5) and Matt Smith looking forward to the future before the 'shock' announcement that he'd left. The truth is that the actor has no say on the matter.

Unfortunately for him, Capaldi will forever more be associated with, "the same old same old".

I think some people are just determined to believe that Capaldi is unpopular and the show is dead despite all the evidence to the contrary, but there comes a point where you just have to accept you might just be the minority opinion and you actually don't know better than the BBC about where to go next with the show. It's the same old tune we saw with others like Catherine Tate and Matt Smith that unfortunately doesn't die down until they're gone.

One of the great things about Doctor Who is its versatility and I think it shows when you see how Doctor Who is popular now in different ways than it was ten years ago, but also in some areas less so or even the same.

I certainly accept it's a minority view on this forum. But outside this forum I think it is a more widely view held that the 12th Doctor's persona has been a mistake. The fall in viewing figures between seasons 8 and 9 is noteable, as is Peter Capaldi's failure to be short-listed for the NTA award two years running.

Add to that the rather sudden and, dare I say, desperate re-writing of the 12th Doctor's personality for season 9 which (for me) suggests even within the BBC there is an acceptance they got it wrong.

I don't think anyone has suggested the show is dead, but I would certainly say it's less popular since the 12th Doctor came along. And the evidence is actually there to support that view.

If I'm honest, I still don't think they've got it right but I do wonder if part of the issue has been Clara. I will be interested to see if the new companion brings out the best in the 12th Doctor because if we get another year of the same I might drop the show until Chibnall starts. It's sad how little I've missed it this year.

If Capaldi is gonna say I want Chibnall to start off with a clean slate with him and give him a better run than Moffat. Maybe he might stay for one season of Chibnall then go through regeneration.
Mulett

Maybe he can regenerate with Moffat's final episode - brand new incarnation but same actor. I'm sure Capaldi can pull it off. The first actor to play two consecutive (but totally different) incarnations of the Doctor.

It sums up my feelings on remarks like this.

I quite agree great news. Peter Capaldi has been things pretty honest in the past with the quotes' we've heard so I've no reason to doubt his wish to stay..

Personally the idea that I've read on this forum quite a lot that the 12th is 'unpopular' with the public doesn't seem borne out by the audience appreciation index figures for the last series. Mostly all around 84 except for Sleep No More so I think its more a minority fandom opinion. .

We haven't seen all the sides of his doctor yet ( the material Peter has been given hasn't always matched his considerable ability) and if Peter wants to stay I'm looking forward to seeing what direction Chris Chibnall's writing could take his doctor. Why want change just for changes sake ?

That's your opinion. Mine is the complete opposite Love Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. But I hated Smith, you may very well of liked him - everyone is different.

Good news, IMHO.
