trouble with iphone 4s backup to iphone 6

Hi All,
I've been having a huge problem restoring a new iphone 6 (ios 10) from a 4s (ios 9) back up via itunes. On my first attempt I received the dreaded new iphone could not be restored due to a corrupt back up (or something similar).
Apple support (who weren't very helpful) said it was because of the different software but this is unavoidable as the iphone 4s couldn't be upgraded to IOS 10.
Does anyone have any advice as to the best way to go from a much older iphone 4s to an iphone 6 via itunes?

Not sure you can copy everything. There is a way using iCloud to copy over some data between the two phones. See this

http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/iph...phone-3626673/

Scroll down to the heading "How to move from an old iPhone to a new iPhone: Transfer data from old iPhone to new iPhone after initial setup"

There may be some third party software to do a more complete job but as I haven't used any I wouldn't like to comment on that.

iCloud will essentially clone one phone to the other. iTunes doesn't.

That just isn't true.

iOS 9 to 10 should be easy, but you must have the latest iTunes which understands iOS 10. The problems occur if you try to restore a backup to an older phone (E.g. backup of 4s on iOS 9 to an iPhone 4 on iOS 7).

iCloud will not restore any passwords, and will only restore apps that are still on the app store (which is the majority)

If you backup the old phone to iTunes and set a password (don't forget this, its stored in the phone, NOT in iTunes) and sync, then all the apps on the phone are copied to iTunes, along with all the configuration and settings and passwords - including Apple's Heath database. You can then restore this to a newer iPhone with all the data intact including passwords for email, apps etc.

If you use iCloud then you have to enter all passwords again. Its also a lot slower.

I have used this since my 3GS and I know plenty of other people whom do this. iOS
