His mother's family were wealthy but she never personally took any of her inheritance. The "family pile" was an old country house that was practically derelict and which they renovated.

Oh look, and here was me thinking this was a thread supposed to be discussing HIGNFY series 52. Silly me.

Jacob Rees-Mog on HIGNFY the Ricky Gervais on Last Leg, yeah that was my viewing night spoilt.

I thought last Friday's edition was reasonable and Jacob Rees-Mogg was as ever, a decent and good-humoured guest. The generic ethnic comedian on Paul's team didn't seem to offer a great deal but then unless they're bleating about racism, generic ethnic comedians on panel shows rarely do.

Out of interest, it's odd how the standard guest line up these days seems to be a Tory/UKIP politician with Ian and a left-wing comedian with Paul. Why do they hardly ever have Labour politicians on these days; are the BBC scared of not toeing Corbyn's party line?

Not toeing Corbyn's line? How does that work, will the leader of the opposition, completely out of power, somehow punish the BBC for it?

I assume you are making the usual clapped-out suggestion that the BBC is in the thrall of communists?

With a few exceptions, most Labour politicians seem to be completely devoid of any sense of humour though they do provide plenty of laughs for everyone else.

So far this series they've had Lib Dem x 2, Labour x 2, Tory x 2, Scot Tory x 1, UKIP (non MP) x 1.

The 2x Tory were on Ian's team. Scot Tory and UKIP on Paul's. Paul is also due to get a Tory this week, Nicky Morgan according to the listings if she's still doing it post trouser-gate.

Wales should put in a complaint.

Had to look that up. Blimey - £995 for a pair of trousers? Not from Primark then...

Oh how could they not have her on after that!? Glad I know now what the banter will be about.

Many male politician's (including Labour ones) wear suits costing quite a bit more than that and of course the Nicky Morgan carries a handbag costing more.

I don't think even his spin doctors / minders try to claim that.

Like the 2nd Viscount Stansgate, another man of the people.

Ian's great btw - no problem with his ascorbic wit in our household.

It wasn't as much the price as how she looked in them that appears to have sparked the spat. Let's face it she does wear some dreadful outfits.

I think she always looks very smart though does sometimes dress down as with the jeans on Sunday.

Of course she can't reach the level of sartorial elegance of Merkel.

Please get your facts right. Tony Benn was no privileged toff. His grandfather (also a Labour politician) was given a political honour to sit as a working Labour peer. These days he would have been made a life peer, but back then all peerages were hereditary. So Benn eventually inherited the peerage but renounced it so he could be an elected MP rather than sit in the Lords.

Westminster School seems rather privileged?

Well if you compare her to the person she is trying to imitate i.e. Mrs T. then I'm afraid her dress sense is poor by comparison. In fact, although I couldn't abide Mrs T. I think May is a very poor substitute all round.

She would have had Ian Hislop needling her about it but other politicians have come out of similar situations and been able to retain some respect. Rather cowardly to back down.

I wonder if some equivalent of a Tub of Lard could be used?
