Except when they mock Corbyn of course, or Prescott in the old days. The people mostly making the news at the moment are right wing so it isn't surprising the satire looks anti-right. But in fact it is always mocking the establishment, whatever political colour it has.

Calling them all champagne socialists is utterly ridiculous. What are people supposed to do if they are left leaning but fairly well off? I doubt many of the comedians can afford to live a champagne lifestyle, or even want to. Except Alexander Armstrong and Miles Jupp naturally.

Why do people on the right think only the less well off can support left wing ideals? Anyone else is called a champagne socialist. And the less well off are labelled as being motivated by jealousy.
*Round of applause*

Victoria Coren, even though I hate her as she is the personification of nepotism at the BBC.
How do you figure that one then? She was well into her thirties with nearly 20 years of experience as a journalist, columnist, performer, and playwright, before she was given any kind of look in with the Beeb. Funny kind of nepotism even if I could think of anyone in her family that had anything like sufficient sway to guarantee anything.

Well, it probably doesn't help that the principle aim of socialism is touted as redistribution of wealth. Just saying!

Was decent enough.

Could do without Roisin "But Brexit!" Conaty though. Incredibly annoying. She irritates on nearly everything she's on.

I think he's been the best out of all the politicians who've hosted the show.

Usually, a lot of them are really awkward (Boris), or get down right pissed off when Hislop/Merton make fun of them (A. Campbell). But he seemed right at home and took himself for a laugh.

I think he gets that he's not really that liked anymore and takes it for granted.
I was surprised - he was quick witted and funny, so much so I developed a lil' crush on him!

It's a very lazy way to avoid engaging in a proper discussion with those whose views are to the left of their own. Basically, if you object to the banking sector ruining the economy, getting bailed out by the public purse, then rewarding the villains with huge bonuses, then you fall into one of two categories. If you are well off, or had reasonable success, then your views are readily dismissed as being a "champagne socialist". On the other hand, if you aren't well off, then it's the "politics of envy".

These shows work best when they are poking fun at the government of the day. If the Tories are in power, then that means they get it in the neck. As Leave won, but all of their leadership b*ggered off, and hoping someone else sorts it, then it is a very obvious, and necessary subject for satire.

I suspect many of those who think it's not as good at is used to be are natural Tory supporters, who thought it was great when they were giving Labour a kicking week after week.

As for Trump, there is no real way to attempt 'balance'. His own supporters within his own party are distancing themselves from him, and who wants to be the person giving the "It's OK to claim you sexually assault women" perspective?
I think you'll find it was the remain campaign's leaders who have buggered off. Leavers are still very much around.

Redustribution of wealth does not mean rich comedians giving away all their wealth. It means a fairer tax system.

Episode 2:

Stephen Mangan hosts with Henning Wehn on Ian's team and Ruth Davidson MSP on Paul's.

Stephen Mangan's 8th appearance, last one series 51
Henning Wehn's 3rd appearance, last one series 51.
Ruth Davidson's 2nd appearance, last one series 50.

Fun fact: Mangan and Wehn were on the same show last series as well, Episode 1.

It's the Beeb's contribution to the preservation of rare breeds. German comedian and Scottish Conservative.

Probably not but his current tour has a lot of sold out venues and he's doing a week in London so obviously has fans

Just for you, as I am sure everyone else knows what it means, and where it comes from:

Perhaps Syria was not a good starting point but all of last evening's show was strained and Mangan not well-suited to draw anything from an uninspiring cast. Ruth Davidson seemed to know she was meant to try to be funny but Henning Wehn looked as if he'd popped across the corridor from WILTY just to make up the numbers.
Have we forgotten how to do political satire?

Probably not, but thanks anyway! Maybe it would mean more to people in the US.

I think the programme was shown over here too. But it's a phrase in quite common use IMO.

OK. It's just that I've never heard anyone use it myself. I used to watch Happy Days but must have missed that episode!

Humor is weird, i've heard sexist, ageist and homophobic stuff on this show but if you can wrap it up as a joke you can get away with it.

Interesting to note that Matt Forde guests tend to turn up on HIGNFY same week.

First Nick Clegg, now Ruth Davison.

Unspun With Matt Forde is a political comedy show currently running on Wednesdays at 10pm on Dave. And he was in the recent impressionists edition of Pointless Celebrities which was the first time I'd ever heard of him. Only after his PC appearance did I see/notice the trailers for his Dave show (which I don't watch).

I watched that, so he obviously didn't make much of an impression on me.
